Doctrinally, Seventh-day Adventists are heirs of the interfaith Millerite movement of the 1840s. Although the name "Seventh-day Adventist" was chosen in 1860, the denomination was not officially organized until Ma y 21, 1863, when the movement included some 125 churches and 3,500 members. Between 1831 and 1844, William Millera Baptist preacher and former army captain in the War of 1812launched the "great second advent awakening" which eventually spread throughout most of the Christian world. Based on his study of the prophecy of Daniel 8:14, Miller calculated that Jesus would return to earth sometime between 1843 and 1844. Others within the movement calculated a specific date of October 22, 1844. When Jesus did not appear, Miller's followers experienced what became to be called "the great Disappointment."

Probe Answers Our E-Mail "Are Seventh-Day Adventists Christians or a Cult?" I have met some folks who are Seventh-Day Adventists. They are a wonderful group of people and appear to know Jesus; however, I definitely do not agree with many of their concepts and would like to get some reliable and scriptural information on this church, if it IS a church. Or is it a cult? You have raised a very important question. Are Seventh-Day Adventists Christian? Is what they believe consistent with biblical precepts? How do we address members of this group? The adventist movement goes back to the 19th century. In the middle of the century there was widespread expectation that the return of Christ was imminent. A Baptist minister named William Miller was convinced that Jesus was coming sometime between 1843 and 1844. This idea was based on Daniel 8:14, "And he said to me, 'For 2,300 evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state.'" He interpreted these evenings and mornings as years, arriving at the date of March 21 of 1843 or 1844. Well, when this date came and went with no appearance by Christ, Miller ended his relationship with the Adventist movement. Others after him, such as Hiram Edson and Ellen G. White, were not so willing to give up just yet. They attempted to reinterpret Miller's prediction according to new revelations. Edson said that Jesus had actually returned in 1844, but His return was different from that expected. He essentially changed "apartments" in heaven, setting up the sanctuary spoken of in Daniel in heaven, where He could begin to evaluate Christians' deeds in order to judge whether they would inherit eternal life. This revelation was called "investigative judgment."

AToday Magazine Archives Mar-Apr 2002 : articles What Adventists Can Learn from John Wesley DAVID LARSON From the AT Archive; Jan/Feb 1996 Even though John Wesley never used the term, he is credited with a distinctive way of thinking about controversial issues called the Wesleyan Quadrilateral. This term honors the way Wesley did his theological work as leader of the Methodist revivals and spiritual grandfather of Adventism. It is a method that formulates Christian views and values by interweaving interpreted lines of evidence from four sources: Scripture, Tradition, Reason, and Experience. Instead of basing his convictions on any one of these, Wesley interpreted and drew on evidence from all four. I believe we Adventists should do the same. This method presupposes that God, though greater than the whole universe, is omnipresent. We can therefore learn about our Creator from Scripture and from other sources as well. Wesley's method also presupposes that humans are finite and fallible. We therefore need a system of checks and balances to keep us from going astray. The Wesleyan Quadri- lateral invites us to follow truth about God and about ourselves wherever we find it. It also reminds us that, if they are all valid, our various interpretations will converge and cohere in mutually reinforcing ways. The Wesleyan Quadrilateral provides a wholistic method of studying Scripture. Let's apply it to the vexing issue of women's ordination facing the Seventh- day Adventists, Wesley's spiritual children, today.
