Advaita Vedanta
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Advaita Vedanta is probably the best known of all Vedanta Vedanta (meaning literally the end of the Vedas) is a branch of Hindu philosophy. It is not based on analysis or empty philosophy, but rather is a system of Jnana Yoga that attempts to aid the individual to englightenment. It relies on the Upanishads, which are known as Vedanta due to their containing the end and fundamental essence of all the Vedas, and some of the earlier Aranyakas. Three branches of Vedanta exist, each branch choosing to interpret the codified scriptures in its own way. The most important and popular Vedantic branch is the Advaita (a- not, dwaita- two; meaning non-duality). This branch was realized by the Hindu philosopher Shankara. (c. 800 AD).

Advaita Vedanta : A Philosophical Reconstruction > Customer Review #1: An excellent brief introduction to Advaita Vedanta.

For anyone who may have become curious about Advaita Vedanta, and who is looking for a good introduction to what many feel is one of the greatest philosophical achievements of either the East or West, there could be no better guide than this book. Eliot Deutsch, professor of philosophy at the University of Hawaii and for many years editor of the prestigious journal, Philosophy East and West, writes in a wonderfully lucid and straightforward style, and clearly admires his subject as being of universal philosophical interest. In his short book of just 120 pages, he skilfully introduces us to the basic ideas of this complex system (Brahman, Levels of Being, Brahman and the World, Self, Karma, Epistemology, Ethics, Moksa and Jnana Yoga), while taking care to avoid overwhelming the reader with too much detail.

The life and legend of the founder of advaita and vedanta philosophy.
    http://www.advaita-vedanta.org/avhp/sankara-life.html
S ANKARA'S L IFE SankarAcArya ashThottaram Transliteration Key The following is based upon accounts known through oral tradition and texts like the mAdhavIya Sankara vijayam . There exists some controversy about Sankara's date , but most traditions are quite unanimous about other details. Birth and childhood: Sankara was born to the nambUdiri brAhmaNa couple, Sivaguru and AryAmbA, in a little village called kAlaDi in Kerala. The couple had remained childless for a long time, and prayed for children at the vaDakkunnAthan (VRshAcala) temple in nearby Trichur. Siva is said to have appeared to the couple in a dream and promised them a choice of one son who would be short-lived but the most brilliant philosopher of his day, or many sons who would be mediocre at best. The couple opted for a brilliant, but short-lived son, and so Sankara was born. Sankara lost his father when quite young, and his mother performed his upanayana ceremonies with the help of her relatives. Sankara excelled in all branches of traditional vaidIka learning. A few miracles are reported about the young Sankara. As a brahmacArin, he went about collecting alms from families in the village. A lady who was herself extremely poor, but did not want to send away the boy empty-handed, gave him the last piece of Amla fruit she had at home. Sankara, sensing the abject poverty of the lady, composed a hymn (kanakadhArA stavam) to SrI, the goddess of wealth, right at her doorstep. As a result, a shower of golden Amlas rewarded the lady for her piety. On another occasion, Sankara is said to have re-routed the course of the pUrNA river, so that his old mother would not have to walk a long distance to the river for her daily ablutions.

Internet Explorer Advaita Fellowship. Wayne Liquorman. All there is is consciousness. You are not a separate controlling force. You are not the doer. You are expression of God. Your mistake in believing you are the doer is the intention, the expression of consciousness. So is it a mistake? You are at every moment the perfect intention and expression of consciousness. Yes, even the bad stuff. Advaita is the final teaching. Advaita means non-duality. Advaita has been an expression of consciousness between guru and seeker for centuries. Advaita in recent times has been expressed by the great sage, Nisargadatta Maharaj. Maharaj was visited by seekers in India and one of them, Ramesh S. Balsekar became an expression of understanding. Ramesh has been visited by seekers for the past twenty years and daily is guru with visiting seekers in his home in Bombay. Now his disciple, Wayne Liquorman, has come to express the understanding. Wayne travels the US and Europe giving talks. The teaching of Advaita through Wayne is clear and simple. All there is is consciousness. The 'Understanding' that all is consciousness comes by grace, or luck if you like, not by any process, study or practice. Study or practices may coincide with the coming of understanding, but do not bring understanding. For what the seeker seeks is that which the seeker has always been and will always be consciousness. This is the teaching of Advaita. Who is there to be enlightened or not enlightened? The expression of the character will be that of seeker or that of guru. It is a play. Truth plays all the parts. Truth plays the part of the one without understanding. Truth plays the part of the one with understanding. They must be on stage together or there is no expression of seeker, of guru. The seeker and the sought are the same. The guru becomes guru in the presence of the seeker. That there is a seeker separate from that which is sought is a mirage, a dream of consciousness. The perceiver, the preceiving and the perceived are all one. There is none but that. Advaita Fellowship: All there is is consciousness. Advaita means nonduality.
