Applications to Generalized Radar and Sonar Analysis Dr. Gerald Kaiser, Instructor
Summary Wavelet analysis has undergone significant growth in the past few years, with many successes in the efficient analysis, processing, and compression of signals and images. It is based on the idea of time-scale decomposition of signals and images, which offers many advantages over the traditional frequency and time-frequency decompositions. Unfortunately, many potential users of this new technique are hindered by the inaccessibility of its mathematical framework. The objectives of this course are as follows: a) To give a practical introduction to time-scale analysis in one and two dimensions, and show that it may be regarded as a wideband generalization of time-frequency analysis. b) To develop space-time-scale analyses specifically adapted to acoustic and electromagnetic waves and apply them to the solution of inverse problems associated with sonar and radar. Participants will receive an extensive set of updated lecture notes typeset in TeX, with many MATLAB examples and illustrations, as well as Dr. Kaiser's textbook 'A Friendly Guide to Wavelets' (Birkhauser, 1994; sixth priting, 1999; 1995 Library of Science Book of the Month). The book and lecture notes are an outgrowth of courses the author has taught for engineers and industry specialists over the past ten years. Wavelets and Signal Processing
It's true that the Torah the visible Torah, that is is only one of the possible permutations of the letters of the eternal Torah, as God crated it and delivered it to the angels. By rearranging the letters of the book over the centuries, we may someday arrive again at the original Torah. But the important thing is not the finding, it is the seeking, it is the devotion with which one spins the wheel of the prayer and scripture, discovering the truth little by little.
Diotallevi in Foucault's Pendulum , by Umberto Eco Using the quote above is, perhaps, ironic, since the character, Diotallevi, in Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum , goes on in the next sentence to denounce the use of computers as tools for seeking truth. Signal processing and filtering is, in its modest way, an attempt to find a better form for a set of information, either by reshaping it or filtering out selected parts (parts that are sometimes labeled as noise). Put another way, signal processing allows us to uncover a form of the signal that is closer to the truth (or a truth). Although we have powerful computing and mathematical tools, perhaps there is some value in taking Diotellevi warning to heart:

Wavelets in Java
This web page publishes the Java source code and Javadoc generated documentation for wavelets. Wavelets are a technique, like Fourier analysis, for analyzing signals. They are also used for data compression, comparision and a variety of other applications. I am not a member of the Java cult. Java does not change everything. Java is just a programming language and in many cases, because it is interpreted, a slow one at that. I implemented the wavelet code in Java because I wanted to keep my Java "chops up". I use C++ at work and implement a lot of my own software in C++, so this is a way of sharpening my Java skills. I have a love/hate relationship with C++, but the more I use Java the more sure I am that I've made the right choice in implementing large software components in C++.
tar
Most of the Java code that implements the wavelet software is packaged with an archive program called tar . The tar program is standard on UNIX, Linux and probably Mac OS X. Originally tar stood for tape archive . If you don't have a copy of tar for Windows NT you can download the win32 binary here . This version of tar is open source software, from Cygnus (now Red Hat), and came with the Cygwin32 package.

A SHORT PRESENTATION BY F. CHAPLAIS
for those who hate preambles
Hardware and Software Requirements
Warning
This presentation is inspired from S.G. Mallat's book and does not pretend to reflect it exactly. It is concerned with the following topics:
  • Fourier analysis (chapter 2) time-frequency analysis (chapter 4, except for the quadratic energy distributions)) frames (chapter 5) singularity analysis and reconstruction (chapter 6 except for the multifractals) wavelet bases and filter banks (chapter 7)
The following topics from the book are not covered here:
  • chapter 3 about discrete signals (except for the FFT and convolutions algorithms, which are briefly described) chapter 8 on wavelet packets and local cosine bases chapter 9 on approximation chapter 10 about estimation (which is being revised by S.G. Mallat for the French edition and the second US edition) chapter 11 on compression and coding (hope to do it someday)
Proposed Tours
Four tours are proposed, corresponding to four different topics. These tours are linked to each other sequentially. Many links allow navigation from one to topic to another for a nonlinear browsing.

A Really Friendly Guide To Wavelets - A good tutorial on Wavelet theory. This article is aimed at the engineer, not the mathematician. Hence, there are no proofs in the text, which means that this tutorial is much easier to read. However, to understand this tutorial, a mathematical background on an engineering level is required. A Wavelet Wading Pool - The paper attempts to give a beginner an understanding of the wavelet transform, by practical application of the wavelet techniques to image compression. The Haar Wavelets are considered and applied to this problem, and the difficulties analyzed. In an attempt to change the artifacts seen in the Haar decomposition, a basis proposed by Richard Bartels is applied and experimented with as well. Both bases turn out to introduce too many artifacts into the image to challenge the JPEG encoding, but the COE basis produces better results than the Haar basis as expected. Compression with Reversible Embedded Wavelets
CREW is a new form of still image compression that is lossy and lossless, bi-level and continuous-tone, progressive by resolution and pixel depth, and can preserve the source image at encode and quantize for the target device at decode or transmission. It uses a reversible wavelet transform. Complete documentation for CREW is available in pdf. CREW was developed by Ricoh Company, Ltd. and Ricoh Innovations, Inc. at the California Research Center . RICOH offered this technology to the ACR-NEMA MED-PACS Working Group IV (DICOM) committee for a new American medical image compression standard. RICOH also offered this technology to the ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG1 (JPEG, JBIG) committee for a new international compression standard this submission led to the new work item called JPEG 2000. Ricoh is now fully supporting JPEG 2000 , which pass the ISO vote to become an International Standard in January 2nd, 2001.
