Introduction
Many time series in geophysics exhibit non-stationarity in their statistics. While the series may contain dominant periodic signals, these signals can vary in both amplitude and frequency over long periods of time.
Fig. 1.
The simplest method for analyzing non-stationarity of a timeseries would be to compute statistics such as the mean and variance for different time periods and see if they are significantly different. In Figure 1 we have also plotted the running 15-year variance, as a measure of total power inherent in the signal versus time. One can see that ENSO had more variance during 1880-1920 and also since 1950, with a relatively quiet period during 1920-1950. While the running variance tells us what the overall strength of the signal was at certain times, it suffers from two major defects:
  • [Time Localization] The shape of the curve is highly dependent on the length of the window used. Fifteen years was chosen above as a compromise between either too-much smoothness (say using a 30-year window), or too-little (a 5-year window). An ideal method would allow different window sizes depending on the scales that one is interested in.
  • [Frequency Localization] The running variance contains no information on the frequency of a periodic signal, only its amplitude (and that only if the window is chosen widely).

    Wavelets at Imager
Here at Imager, we've been doing some work with wavelets, those clever little multiresolution basis functions. We're releasing some of our work via this page, as described below.
The Course "Wavelets and their Applications in Computer Graphics"
This course, taught at SIGGRAPHs '94 and '95, was organized by Dr. Alain Fournier . It includes presentations by a number of experienced wavelet researchers. You can download the notes accompanying the SIGGRAPH '95 presentation of this course . These are in the form of a (UNIX) compress ed file 3.4MB in size that uncompresses to an 11.0MB PostScript(tm) file. The printed document is 239 pages long. These notes are provided through the courtesy of Dr. Fournier. If you have difficulty downloading this file over the Web, it is also available via FTP at node "ftp.cs.ubc.ca" in directory "/pub/local/bobl/wvlt" as file "notes.ps.Z".
wvlt - The Imager Wavelet Library
The Imager Wavelet Library (wvlt) is a small set of routines that allow the user to manipulate wavelets. This package includes C source for the library and for three sample binaries that call it, some demos, and some (sparse) documentation. It was described in the above course. You can download a UNIX shar file (its size is about 164KB) of the most recent release, 2.1, of this package. Alternatively, you can download

Wang developed an art image retrieval system for the Stanford University Libraries. He has later worked for the IBM QBIC project, the NEC AMORA project, and the AI Center of SRI International. From 1999 to 2000, the project was funded by the National Science Foundation under the TID (Trusted Image Distribution) project (PI: Gio Wiederhold). TID is part of the NSF Digital Library Initiative II (DLI-II) program . The technology research has been continued at Penn State University since 2001, with funding from the National Science Foundation ITR (PI: James Z. Wang), PNC Foundation, and SUN Microsystems. If you have any questions or comments about the image retrieval project, please send a message to James Z. Wang

The Leeds Workshop is a well established annual event now looking forward to its 23rd year. Although begun as an internal event, it now enjoys the support of a number of visitors each year from other universities and research bodies from home and abroad. These workshops usually extend over three days with input by one or more invited speakers. Over recent years, the theme of the workshop has reflected the growing, but not exclusive, departmental interest and expertise in bioinformatics, image analysis and shape analysis.

    WAILI Wavelets with Integer Lifting
    Introduction
WAILI is a wavelet transform library. It includes some basic image processing operations based on the use of wavelets and forms the backbone of more complex image processing operations.
    Features
    WAILI
    • Uses integer wavelet transforms based on the Lifting Scheme
    • Provides various wavelet transforms of the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau family of biorthogonal wavelets
    • Provides crop and merge operations on wavelet-transformed images
    • Provides noise reduction based on wavelet thresholding using Generalized Cross Validation
    • Provides scaling of images
    • Provides edge enhancement of images
    • Provides also some simple image operations (addition and subtraction of images)
    • Allows different image representations (RGB, YUV, Lab, ...)
WAILI.xl is a version of WAILI with Extensions for Very Large Images . Very large images are divided in blocks, which do not necessarily have to be present in the computer system's main memory. WAILI.xl provides most of the operations implemented in WAILI.
    Implementation
The software library is written in C++ and extensively uses features of the ISO C++ 97 Standard to allow for a cleaner design. The development was done under
