Systems Theory
On top of the topological ontology the standard system-theoretic notions such as system, subsystem, system boundary, environment, open/closedness etcetera can be defined. Some of these definitions can be found in Figure . The ontology projection is of the include and extend type, just like in the topological ontology.
Figure 5: Excerpt from the systems theory ontology. This ontology introduces system-theoretic notions on top of the topological ontology.
Definition 3 states that a system is a mereological individual (but not every mereological individual is a system). The in-system(x,s) holds for individuals that are in the system and are not subsystems of it. This is different from the subsystem-of(sub,sup) , where the part must be a system. A connection is in the boundary of a system when it connects an individual in the system to an individual outside the system. With this definition, the classes open-system and closed-system can be defined easily.

We organized the material on our server in a somewhat "polycontextural" way to make the navigation more transparent:
We want to provide navigational support for various possible approaches to Polycontexturality.
Therefore you can start with any of the four starting points of the following scetch which will take you to distinct ways of approaching PCL.
If you prefer a more systematic approach you may continue with the keywordlist , the Mindmap or the introduction below.

STEREOLOGER : the theory and practice of modern unbiased stereology at your fingertips.
Introduction to Unbiased Stereology
In the scientific method, a researcher will pose a hypothesis and then collect data to test the hypothesis. Medical researchers usually collect information about the number, length, surface area, and volume of specific aspects of their specimens for comparison. By examining and comparing these quantities, researchers can prove or disprove a hypothesis. However, an experiment can only be considered valid if the data have been collected in a reliable and unbiased manner. Recently, several prominent journals have strongly recommended collection of information using unbiased methods.
Unbiased Method
Stereology is an accepted unbiased method for collecting information about the number, length, surface area, and volume of specimen attributes. The method is unbiased in part because no underlying assumption is made about the structure being studied. The method relies on systematic uniform random (SUR) sampling of the specimen, which yields an accurate estimate of the characteristic being sampled. SUR sampling is sampling in which a start location for data collection is randomly determined; from that point, sampling is uniform. For example, you may want to select 4 cards from a 52-card deck. To conduct a SUR sampling of the deck, you would pick a random start from 1 to 13 and then take that card and every thirteenth card after that (i.e., 7th, 20th, 33rd, and 46th cards).
