121. AMBIOS Home Page
The objectives of this project are to determine the interrelationships between the physical properties of ecosystems and the ecology of organisms in the generation of biodiversity, to measure objectively the resultant diversity and to produce operational concepts of biodiversity which are of general applicability and importance.

AMBIOS Home Page
Integrating Environmental and Population Variation: A Model for Biodiversity Studies (AMBIOS)
Areas of study:
  • The relationships between breeding ecology, niche width and biogeographic range, and their bearing on the future dynamics of biodiversity at a time of accelerating environmental change and extinction will be studied.
  • The development of operational concepts for assessing and describing the very basis of biodiversity will be established This will involve evaluating and comparing phenotypic and genotypic features as measures of the buffering capacity of the components of biodiversity with respect to changing environmental factors, and will be achieved by focusing on genetic heterogeneity levels and phenotypic responses in relation to the environment, and on thermal tolerance.
  • The determination of the mechanisms involved in the transition from polymorphic, interbreeding populations to those of species status, and the elucidation of how such changes can be distinguished from phenotypic plasticity, will be addressed.
  • Techniques for the identification of species and 'lower' taxonomic units will be developed, and new molecular methods tested in those species in which the levels of polymorphism are high.

SRS HOME USER INFORMATION VISITOR INFORMATION BEAMLINES ... WORLDWIDE CALENDAR Roadworks around site The Daresbury Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS) is a world class facility dedicated to the exploitation of Synchrotron Radiation (SR) for fundamental and applied research. The SRS offers a large mix of experimental facilities which deliver radiation with wavelengths extending from the infrared to hard X-rays. Techniques available include X-ray diffraction, X-ray spectroscopy (XAFS), small-angle/wide-angle scattering, soft X-ray spectroscopy, photoemission, and imaging. The SRS is a 2GeV electron storage ring, operated solely for the provision of synchrotron radiation (synchrotron light) for multiple simultaneous user experiments.
The facility comprises a suite of three electron accelerators, two feeding sequentially into the third, which is the main storage ring. The synchrotron light spectrum is emitted from dipole bending magnets and, enhanced in narrow spectral regions, from insertion devices. The SRS has five of these: two X-ray (high field superconducting) wigglers, a VUV-SXR undulator and three multipole wigglers. The storage ring serves experimental stations of which 36 will be available for scheduling for users in 2002/03. Each is optimised for a particular spectral range segment, exploiting radiation from an SRS dipole or an insertion device, and in most cases, is used for a variety of scientific and technological applications. Operational ocean modelling
For those working at sea or living near the coast, forecasts of wave height, ocean currents or storm surges are just as vital as forecasts of the weather. We routinely run a number of ocean models to provide forecasts that help organisations such as ferry operators and oil companies to plan their operations at sea. This includes sea-state forecasting with ocean wave models; development of our Forecasting Ocean Assimilation Model (FOAM), a global real-time ocean analysis and forecast model; and regional modelling of the shelf seas around the UK, for which a long-standing operational application is storm surge prediction. More about operational ocean modelling
    Seasonal prediction
Although it is generally not possible to forecast individual weather events more than several days in advance, it is possible to provide useful predictions of conditions averaged over weeks to months and over large areas. We provide experimental seasonal predictions, covering all areas of the globe, to UK government departments, United Nations organisations, and national meteorological services worldwide. University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory
The work of the Theory and Semantics Group is centred around mathematical models of a variety of languages and logics. These models are intended to be used as a basis for specification and verification, and as a tool for clarifying programming concepts. We use techniques such as structural operational semantics, linear logic, domain theory and category theory. Work is in progress on the underlying mathematical structures of these, and on their application to the study of higher order typed programming languages such as Standard ML, to object-based languages, to foundational languages for concurrent, distributed and mobile computation, to hardware description languages, and to security problems. Work is also being undertaken on the analysis of programming languages in the setting of abstract interpretation and on practical optimising compilation for imperative and functional languages. Related research is undertaken within the Automated Reasoning Group . We also have links with the Logic Seminar at DPMMS (Dept of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics).
