    M aya M athematics Instead of ten digits like we have today, the Maya used a base number of 20. (Base 20 is vigesimal.) They also used a system of bar and dot as "shorthand" for counting. A dot stood for one and a bar stood for five. In the following table, you can see how this works.
    Because the base of the number system was 20, larger numbers were written down in powers of 20. We do that in our decimal system too: for example 32 is 3*10+2. In the Maya system, this would be 1*20+12, because they used 20 as base. Numbers were written from bottom to top. Below you can see how the number 32 was written: 20's 1's It was very easy to add and subtract using this number system, but they did not use fractions. Here's an example of a simple addition: 8000's 400's 20's 1's As you can see, adding is just a matter of adding up dots and bars! Different cultures have different traditional numeral systems used for writing numbers and for naming large numbers. Although most traditional number systems are based on the decimal numeral system , there are many regional variations, including: Duodecimal numbers have only been used consistently in a few cases. One example of duodecimal numerals is in use in the Chepang language of Nepal . However, their influence can still be seen in many cultures, such as in the imperial system of units , and the former British system of pounds, shillings and pence. In many Asian languages , the great redundancy of English number words is avoided. For very large (and very small) numbers, traditional systems have been superseded by the use of scientific notation and the system of SI prefixes . Evidence shows that the Mayan culture of Yucatan and Central America were extremely advanced not only in mathematics, but were believed to be geniuses when it came to time and calendars, astronomy, architecture, and commerce. It is believed that the Mayan culture was obsessed by time and numbers which studies have concluded based on drawings found on historical monuments. The Mayans were a thousand years in advance to Europe when it came to mathematics. Their intellectual knowledge was not inferior to any world standards of the time.     The Indian numerals discussed in our article Indian numerals form the basis of the European number systems which are now widely used. However they were not transmitted directly from India to Europe but rather came first to the Arabic/Islamic peoples and from them to Europe. The story of this transmission is not, however, a simple one. The eastern and western parts of the Arabic world both saw separate developments of Indian numerals with relatively little interaction between the two. By the western part of the Arabic world we mean the regions comprising mainly North Africa and Spain. Transmission to Europe came through this western Arabic route, coming into Europe first through Spain. There are other complications in the story, however, for it was not simply that the Arabs took over the Indian number system. Rather different number systems were used simultaneously in the Arabic world over a long period of time. For example there were at least three different types of arithmetic used in Arab countries in the eleventh century: a system derived from counting on the fingers with the numerals written entirely in words, this finger-reckoning arithmetic was the system used for by the business community; the sexagesimal system with numerals denoted by letters of the Arabic alphabet; and the arithmetic of the Indian numerals and fractions with the decimal place-value system. The first sign that the Indian numerals were moving west comes from a source which predates the rise of the Arab nations. In 662 AD Severus Sebokht, a Nestorian bishop who lived in Keneshra on the Euphrates river, wrote:-

    Errors in digital code will result in the changing of a to a 1 or vice versa. One helpful method for determining if a single error of that type has ocurred is to check the evenness or oddness of the sum of the set bits. To facilitate this check an extra bit called the parity bit is added to each word in a data transmission. In the even-parity method the parity bit is chosen so that the total number of 1's including the parity bit is even. The receiver checks the parity to detect any single-bit errors. The same thing can be accomplished with an odd-parity method, so it is necessary to know which is being used in order to communicate with a host computer. It will also be necessary to know how many data bits and how many stop bits are being used.

    In mathematics, the phrase number system refers to any collection of objects that has the following properties:
    • there is a rule for how to add two objects together,
    • there is a rule for how to multiply two objects together,
    • the rules for addition and multiplication satisfy the familiar properties of arithmetic, such as
      • commutativity (order doesn't matter),
      • associativity (in a sum of three of more terms, it doesn't matter which two you add first, and likewise for products), and
      • distributivity a b c ab ac ), and
    • all objects have corresponding negatives (from which we can define subtraction as the addition of one object to the negative of another), and some objects have reciprocals (from which we can define division as the multiplication of one object by the reciprocal of another). No "infinity" concept exists in the context of any number system, if by number system one means a collection of concepts that have operations like addition and multiplication the way familiar numbers do, operations which obey the usual properties of arithmetic. One way to see this is to think, what would infinity minus 1 be? It couldn't be a finite number, since no finite number plus 1 equals infinity. So it must be infinite, and this would mean From this one can immediately see that the rules of arithmetic must be violated, since if they held one could subtract infinity from both sides to conclude that -1 = 0, which isn't true. Therefore, there is no number system which possesses the usual rules of arithmetic and in which infinity exists.     Every year, more than 50,000 community college students transfer to the California State University and the University of California. It is common for many of the 106 community colleges to have students transfer to all of the public four-year universities. A glance at campus catalogs, course numbering schemes, academic policies, and the processes involved in determining course comparability for major preparation or comparability of courses in support of another major will illustrate the potential for confusion and misinterpretation. The need for quality course articulation and a course numbering system to not only simplify the process, but to provide accurate academic preparation information in a consistent and orderly manner, is very obvious.
