    In the of 1823 Cauchy gives what is identified as the first modern definition of integral. He considers the case of continuous functions on an interval, and then expands on the case of the functions with one or a finite number of discontinuity . In an 1829 article of in the "Journal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik", dealing with the problem of the representation of functions in Fourier's series, Dirichlet raises the issue of the case of functions with a finite number of discontinuity, also giving the example of the function carrying his name. In 1854 Bernhard Riemann (1826-1866) wrote his thesis for the University teaching qualification, entitled , that is "On the possibility to represent a function through a trigonometric series", which remained unknown until 1867 when it was published by Dedekind. Here, the integral called after him is introduced and is supplied with examples of functions that, even with an infinite number of discontinuity, turn out to be integrable. Numerous researches are grafted on this new definition. They relate to the properties of the subsets of the straight line, first among them those of Cantor. More and more contributions were added about the characterisation of integrability in relation to the set of points of discontinuity like the ones from Hermann Henkel, Paul Du Bois - Reymond, Henry Smith, Axel Harnack, Vito Volterra.

Scientists in this laboratory are working to quantify those effects. Sensory integration Nancy Tye Murray, Mitchell Sommers and Brent Spehar Sensory integration refers to the ability to integrate simultaneous inputs into a single percept. The most common measure of sensory integration is auditory-visual integration, which assesses an individual's ability to combine information presented simultaneously in visual and auditory channels. If we can figure out how well a person can integrate speech information, why not see if that ability is consistent for other types of integration? In particular, within modality integration (or between ears) would help reveal if this ability is specific to speech communication, or a reflection of a more global ability to integrate simultaneous information. Other types of sensory integration, unimodal and bimodal, are assessed to determine if A+V Integration ability is specific to the auditory and visual modalities, or if there is a more underlying ability to integrate information. Filtered Sentence Integration measures how well a subject can perceive a sentence that has been filtered into two spectrally disjoint bands. Dichotic presentations are compared to monotic presentations. Non-speech integration measures are intended to measure integration without any linguistic component, which may be an essential element in combining information from different modalities for communication purposes. Harmonic Integration ability looks at how well one can distinguish small changes in a harmonic sequence, dichotically compared to monotically. Temporal gap discrimination, again monotically compared to dichotically, measures the amount of temporal integration that can occur between two channels.

This is a critical feature of a full development of integration theory; moreover, it provides the basic framework for probability theory. Measure theory is a meeting place between the tame applicability of real functions and the wild possibilities of set theory. This is the setting of fractals.

    by Robert A. Korajczyk A wide array of official capital controls across countries makes it difficult to perform cross-sectional analysis of the effects of market segmentation. This article constructs a measure of deviations from capital market integration that can be consistently applied across countries. It measures the deviations of asset returns from an equilibrium model of returns constructed assuming market integration. Applying the measure to stock returns from twenty-four national markets indicates that market segmentation tends to be much larger for emerging markets than for developed markets, and that the measure tends to decrease over time. Along several dimensions, the proposed measure yields results that are consistent with reasonable priors about the relations between effective integration and explicit capital controls, capital market development, and economic growth.     This text contains a basic introduction to the abstract measure theory and the Lebesgue integral. Most of the standard topics in the measure and integration theory are discussed. In addition, topics on the Hewitt-Yosida decomposition, the Nikodym and Vitali-Hahn-Saks theorems and material on finitely additive set functions not contained in standard texts are explored. There is an introductory section on functional analysis, including the three basic principles, which is used to discuss many of the classic Banach spaces of functions and their duals.
