author="Finn Kuno Christensen"; authoremail="fkc@imm.dtu.dk"; contactname="contact.htm"; Welcome to the Mathematical Statistics section Mathematical statistics is an interdisciplinary subject aimed at developing models and analytical methods for systems containing a substantial element of random variation. Often the motivation for the research is a practical problem involving the development and analysis of a mathematical statistical model. In this way the section is in touch with many different areas:
  • The development of forecasting models, predictive control and modelling of dynamic systems (Time series analysis), General optimal and adaptive control methods (Stochastic control theory), Planning and analysis of tests (Statistical design and analysis of experiments), Models for growth and decomposition of biological systems (Environmental statistics), Random sampling plans and other methods for quality control (Statistical quality control), Analysis of spectral data (Multivariate analysis and classification)

John E. Freunds Mathematical Statistics (6th Edition) > Customer Review #1: Decent but severely overpriced

I used this book for a 300 level undergraduate probability course. Im glad its over now! Pros:
1) The book is set up in a straightforward way, running from counting techniques to probability and then statistics. 2) The examples were pretty helpful. Cons: 1)PRICE!!!!!!!! Every college student knows that textbooks are overpriced these days. The companies seem to justify this by adding links to related web content, putting color photos/graphics on every page, etc. This book has none of this! Its all black and white! All the graphs look like they were done on an Apple II! Hey, I like pictures as much as the next guy, but but a 6 year old edition of 600 black text pages is not worth $100!!!!!! 2)No solution manualfor some of the more complicated problems, you need the solution manual, not just a numerical answer at the back of the book.

Journal Information for The Annals of Statistics
Publisher Institute of Mathematical Statistics Moving Wall The Annals of Statistics publishes research papers of the highest quality reflecting the many facets of contemporary statistics. Primary emphasis is placed on importance and originality, not on formalism. The discipline of statistics has deep roots in both mathematics and in substantive scientific fields. Mathematics provides the language in which models and the properties of statistical methods are formulated. It is essential for rigor, coherence, clarity and understanding. Consequently, our policy is to continue to play a special role in presenting research at the forefront of mathematical statistics, especially theoretical advances that are likely to have a significant impact on statistical methodology or understanding. Substantive fields are essential for continued vitality of statistics since they provide the motivation and direction for most of the future developments in statistics. We thus intend to also publish papers relating to the role of statistics in interdisciplinary investigations in all fields of natural, technical and social science. A third force that is reshaping statistics is the computational revolution, and

The members of staff are Professor Ian Jolliffe Dr Andrew Lawson Dr Ian Wilson and Dr William Scott . The research activities of this group are broad, and generally have an applied emphasis. An area of interest to most members of the group is multivariate analysis. Professor Ian Jolliffe 's main research interests are in multivariate analysis and applications of statistics to atmospheric science. Three current and past research students have worked with him on problems in the simplification and interpretation of multivariate techniques. A collaboration with the department of Child Health has led to 5 publications and a current studentship project on discrimination between carrot cultivars and also between sounds made by fish, in collaboration with BioSS (Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland) is being conducted by another research student. During 2002 Jolliffe will publish, as author or co-author, three books. These are a much expanded second edition of his well-known book on Principal Component Analysis, a second edition of an advanced textbook on Statistical Inference and a co-edited volume on Environmental Forecast Verification. Dr Andrew Lawson Dr Ian Wilson Dr William Scott Other areas of methodological interest to the group include spatial statistics, time series analysis and computational statistics.
