    Introduction
Statistics is the science of obtaining, synthesizing, predicting, and drawing inferences from data. Elementary calculations of mean and standard variation suffice to summarize a large, finite, normally-distributed dataset; the field of Statistics exists since data are not usually so nicely given. If we do not know all the elements of the dataset, we must discuss sampling and experimental design; if the data are not normal we must use other parameters to summarize them, or resort to nonparametric methods; if multiple data are involved, we study the measures of interaction among the variables. Other topics include the study of time-dependent data, and the foundations necessary to avoid ambiguity or paradox. Computational methods (e.g. for curve-fitting) are of particular importance in applications to the sciences and engineering as well as financial and actuarial work.

WELCOME TO BARCELONA The Sixth edition of the joint meeting of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the Bernoulli Society will take place in Barcelona in July 2004. Scheduled every four years, the joint IMS/BS meetings are the major worldwide events in Probability and Statistics. The program covers a wide range of topics in statistics and probability, presenting recent developments and the state of the art in a variety of modern research topics and in applications such as mathematical finance and statistical bioinformatics. The program include up to twelve Special Invited Lectures given by leading specialists, thirty-five Invited Paper Sessions and a large number of contributed talks. The venue of the meeting is the old building of the University of Barcelona, located downtown. The city of Barcelona offers many attractions both cultural and touristic, such as a rich variety of modernist art and beautiful beaches. On behalf of the Scientific and Organizing Committees we are glad to invite you to come to Barcelona. Your participation will ensure that 2004 IMS/BS meeting will become an unforgettable scientific event.

The Nordic Conference on Mathematical Statistics (NORDSTAT) is a meeting place for probabilists and statisticians from the countries in Northern Europe. NORDSTAT also welcomes participants from countries outside Scandinavia, in particular from our close neighbours in the Baltic states. The official language at all sessions of this international conference is English. The focus is on recent research in the Nordic countries, but we are also very happy to announce that the conference will be attended by a few specially invited guests from overseas.
    Programme
Now a detailed time schedule is availabe. NORDSTAT 2002 is planned to have four main themes in plenar sessions with invited speakers and discussants, and 12 partially parallel theme sessions with contributed papers, organized by the convenors listed below. The parallel sessions give both established researchers and PhD students an opportunity to present their latest work and gain new contacts. Attendants who wants to make a contribution to a parallel session should contact the convenor by no later than April 1, 2002, submitting a title and a short abstract.

    BERNOULLI SOCIETY
    FOR MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY
The Bernoulli Society was founded in 1975 as a Section of the International Statistical Institute ( ISI ). The Bernoulli Society now has a membership of around 1500 representing nearly 70 countries, a third of those also being members of the ISI who chose the Bernoulli Society as their Section. The objectives of the Bernoulli Society are the advancement of the sciences of probability (including stochastic processes) and mathematical statistics and of their applications to all those aspects of human endeavour, which are directed towards the increase of natural knowledge and the welfare of mankind.
