Summary Wavelet analysis has undergone significant growth in the past few years, with many successes in the efficient analysis, processing, and compression of signals and images. It is based on the idea of time-scale decomposition of signals and images, which offers many advantages over the traditional frequency and time-frequency decompositions. Unfortunately, many potential users of this new technique are hindered by the inaccessibility of its mathematical framework. The objectives of this course are as follows: a) To give a practical introduction to time-scale analysis in one and two dimensions, and show that it may be regarded as a wideband generalization of time-frequency analysis. b) To develop space-time-scale analyses specifically adapted to acoustic and electromagnetic waves and apply them to the solution of inverse problems associated with sonar and radar. Participants will receive an extensive set of updated lecture notes typeset in TeX, with many MATLAB examples and illustrations, as well as Dr. Kaiser's textbook 'A Friendly Guide to Wavelets' (Birkhauser, 1994; sixth priting, 1999; 1995 Library of Science Book of the Month). The book and lecture notes are an outgrowth of courses the author has taught for engineers and industry specialists over the past ten years. In the Editors view, the formal mathematical expression of economic ideas is of vital importance to economics. Such an expression can determine whether a loose economic intuition has a coherent, logical meaning. Also, a full formal development of economic ideas can itself suggest new economic concepts and intuitions.
The primary objective of the Journal is to provide a forum for work in economic theory which expresses economic ideas using formal mathematical reasoning. For work to add to this primary objective, it is not sufficient that the mathematical reasoning be new and correct. The work should have real economic content. The economic ideas should be interesting and important. These ideas may pertain to any field of economics or any school of economic thought. During the late nineteenth century a strange intellectual phenomenon, pyramidology, found its way to both sides of the Atlantic. In his book, Secrets of the Great Pyramid , Peter Tompkins relates in full how modern pyramidology, as distinct from its ancient counterpart, got its start. As discussed in Secrets of the Great Pyramid and also in Martin Gardner's Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science in 1859 John Taylor, an eccentric British publisher, produced a work entitled The Great Pyramid: Why Was It Built? And Who Built It? Accordingly, Taylor posited that the architect who had planned and supervised the building of the Great Pyramid of Cheops was not an Egyptian but probably the biblical patriarch Noah. Later pyramidologists suggested that its designer was Melchizedek, ) but in many other ways they accepted Taylor's hypothesis.
Although Taylor had never been to Egypt, the Great Pyramid had long interested him. What he ascertained from his study of it was that the architectural proportions of the Great Pyramid had many interesting geometric and mathematical properties. For example, Taylor discovered that the ratio of the perimeter of the base of the pyramid to twice its height gave a fairly close approximation of the number , or the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Taylor believed that this important universal constant was intentionally incorporated in the dimensions of the pyramid. The presence of the ratio was regarded as particularly amazing in view of the fact that there is no historical record of anyone having calculated an accurate value for it until many centuries after the construction of the Great Pyramid.

This symposium is designed to address current issues in meta-analysis. There will be reports on four topics: meta-analysis for policy decisions, publication bias, heterogeneity models, and equating of medical outcome measures. In addition, there will be other topics related to the methodology of meta-analysis or systematic reviews.
Abstracts for oral presentations or poster sessions are invited on the above or related topics. The closing date for abstracts is March 15, 2002.

Functional analysis views the big picture in differential equations, for example, thinking of a differential operator as a linear map on a large set of functions. Thus this area becomes the study of (infinite-dimensional) vector spaces with some kind of metric or other structure, including ring structures (Banach algebras and C-* algebras for example). Appropriate generalizations of measure, derivatives, and duality also belong to this area.
