Smooth Manifolds
One of the most important changes general relativity forced in physical theory was the transition from the use of flat (vector) spaces to that of curved spaces. The former are globally Euclidean (a formal description of flat space): the latter are locally Euclidean, but deviate from this behaviour in `large' regions. The mathematical formalism for describing curved spaces is the smooth manifold A smooth manifold is a topological space with an open cover in which the covering neighbourhoods are all smoothly isomorphic to one another. One generally defines `smoothly' for these purposes in terms of a smooth atlas . As time goes by, I'll doubtless fill that definition in with hyper-links to explain the jargon it contains. For the present, what matters is that we obtain a notion of smoothness for morphisms involving the manifold and the ability to define scalar functions on it and embeddings of our space of scalars in it (paths). From this we can obtain a full tensor bundle for the smooth manifold and a notion of smoothness for tensor fields on the manifold.

Genevieve Walsh compiled the index. Numbers on the right margin correspond to the original edition's page numbers. Thurston's Three-Dimensional Geometry and Topology , Volume 1 ( Princeton University Press , 1997) is a considerable expansion of the first few chapters of these notes. As part of its 1996-97 program in Low Dimensional Topology , MSRI will host a weeklong workshop on Knots and 3-manifolds , August 26-30, 1996. The workshop is being organized by Andrew Casson (Chair), Allen Hatcher, John Luecke, Walter Neumann, and Abigail Thompson This workshop will be centered on the geometric topology of knots and 3-manifolds. Topics will include but not be limited to:
  • Geometrization of 3-manifolds, hyperbolic structures.
  • Knot theory, Dehn surgery on knots and links.
  • Applications of minimal surfaces to 3-manifolds.
  • Foliations, laminations, contact structures.
  • Fundamental groups of 3-manifolds, representations and moduli spaces.
  • Heegaard splittings, spines of 3-manifolds.

In automotive engineering a manifold or header is a part of an engine that supplies the fuel air mixture to the cylinders (intake or inlet manifold), or collects the exhaust gases from multiple cylinders into one pipe (exhaust manifold). In mathematics , a manifold is a topological space that looks locally like the "ordinary" Euclidean space R n and is a Hausdorff space . An example is the surface of a sphere such as Earth, which is not a plane, but small patches of it are homeomorphic to (i.e., topologically equivalent to) patches of the Euclidean plane. To make precise the notion of "looks locally like" one uses local coordinate systems or charts . A connected manifold has a definite topological dimension , which equals the number of coordinates needed in each local coordinate system. What follows below is a clean, contemporary mathematical treatment of manifolds; the foundational aspects of the subject were clarified during the 1930s, making precise intuitions dating back to the latter half of the 19th century, and developed through differential geometry and Lie group theory.

In Riemannian geometry , a Riemannian manifold is a real differentiable manifold in which each tangent space is equipped with an inner product in a manner which varies smoothly from point to point.
