Lattice Gas Automata
"Lattice Gas Automata" are not what one might call "new" anymore; the first model was invented in 1973 and was introduced by Hardy, de Pazzis and Pomeau [1] (it is thus called "HPP"-model), in order to study ergodicity-related problems. These systems being -as we shall see- entirely discrete they present the advantage of allowing straightforward implementation on computers and they allow to perform simulations with many more particles than "realistical" models in which one has to take into account the continuous values of positions, velocities and interaction potentials with a finite precision. The HPP-model is based on a square lattice whose nodes can be occupied by the "fluid"'s particles. Thus space is discretised, and in practice it is also finite. The boundary conditions may be chosen periodic, bounce-back, wind-tunnel-like or whatever may be convenient. In addition to this, impulsions are also also distributed in a discrete fashion: all particles have the same mass (equal to one unit) and equal absolute velocity -equal to one unit, i.e.

A Cryptographic Perspective
Authors: Daniele Micciancio and Shafi Goldwasser The Kluwer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science, vol. 671. Kluwer Academic Publishers. March 2002, 220 pages ISBN 0-7923-7688-9 [BibTeX] [Amazon] [Kluwer]
Description
Complexity of Lattice Problems: A Cryptographic Perspective is an essential reference for those researching ways in which lattice problems can be used to build cryptographic systems. It will also be of interest to those working in computational complexity, combinatorics, and foundations of cryptography. The book presents a self-contained overview of the state of the art in the complexity of lattice problems, with particular emphasis on problems that are related to the construction of cryptographic functions. Specific topics covered are the strongest known inapproximability result for the shortest vector problem; the relations between this and other computational lattice problems; an exposition of how cryptographic functions can be built and proven secure based on worst-case hardness assumptions about lattice problems; and a study of the limits of non-approximability of lattice problems. Some background in complexity theory, but no prior knowledge about lattices, is assumed. The aim of the authors is to make lattice-based cryptography accessible to a wide audience, ultimately yielding further research and applications. Complexity of Lattice Problems: A Cryptographic Perspective will be valuable to anyone working in this fast-moving field. It serves as an excellent reference, providing insight into some of the most challenging issues being examined today.

Making Creatures with FFD
This tutorial is a chapter from my Building Awesome Creatures Book. Last section, we took capsule primitives and formed them into muscle primtives. Then we used FFD and booleans to make our biped seamless. By relying heavily on a blending plugin such as blend by digimation, we were able to achieve excellent results. Now, let's model a more irregular type surface using FFD again. This character is way simplier than the blobby mesh, therefore you may not even need to merge the various mesh parts we are going to create. Modeling with FFD Golden Rule: 1. When adjusting FFD lattice points, always drag to select your points. 90% of the time, I always make square selections. This is very important. First, we are going to build our creatures leg. Draw a 12-sided capsule in your Top and Front viewports Radius:42 and Height:-242. It should have at least 3 to 4 segments. Apply modify FFD(box) 4x4x5. Adjust your leg to look this Left viewport. Label this object leg01. Now we need to make a shape that slightly resembles a bone and then position it directly above this one at a nice angle. Draw a capsule of dimension Radius:68 and Height:-421. Give the primitive at least 5 segments. Rotate the leg on the Z axis. MAke sure it is properly placed in your Front and Left viewports. Remember, do not apply any transforms in your perspective view. Apply FFD. Manipulate the lattice until you get a nice bone shape where both ends are kinda balls up. Label this object leg02. To complete this leg object, clone leg02. Drag the copy to where the ends meet with leg02. Your viewport should look something like this one.

    3-D Lattice Puzzles
Check out your spatial awareness. The puzzles below feature a 3 x 3 x 3 lattice of spheres. Each sphere bears one of seven letters (A-G). The letters represent the operations: Straight through (the null operation), Left, Right, Up, Down, Anti-clockwise roll and Clockwise roll. All you have to do is discover which operation is represented by which letter, such that a path starting at In 1 will end at Out 1 and so on. You can associate operations with letters by first clicking on a lettered button in the central column and then clicking on the button for the desired operation from right hand column. To display the effect of your choice, choose a particular input point using the Step button and then click Test. The red L-shaped markers represent heading (along a lattice line) and orientation. If you imagine that the L symbol represents a seat, then you sit astride the lattice line with the line perpendicular to it supporting your back. All entry points ( In 1 , etc.) start you off upright, that is to say with your head facing up. It doesn't matter which way up you are when you leave the lattice provided the co-ordinates and heading are correct. Remember, if you are flying horizontally but upside down, a Down operation will take you up. I find this hard, but the little L's help me a lot. Good luck. Update: Pierre Baillargeon has supplied an enhancement which he finds helpful in keeping track of visited spheres. The left-hand column shows which spheres have been visited (when you press the test button) and the order of (first) visiting. His enhancement is the more remarkable as he produced it without the benefit of the original Java.

    C-ship: The Lattice Galaxy
Let's begin our exploration of the strange laws of space and time in one of the strangest corners of the universe, the Lattice galaxy.
    GIF
JPEG Since we'll be exploring how space and time stretch when you travel at velocities approaching the speed of light, it's handy to have a large scale measuring stick, and the Lattice galaxy will do nicely. Located billions of light years from Earth, the Lattice was constructed by cosmic engineers of an advanced technological civilisation as a work of art. Its form, reminiscent of the Borg ship of Star Trek: The Next Generation reflects the obsession of its otherwise sophisticated makers with reruns of that series. But it's perfect for our purposes, so we'll borrow it for a while. The Lattice is huge , 64,000 light-years along each edge; a typical spiral galaxy like the Milky Way is shown alongside for comparison. The spacing between the joints, 8,000 light years, is roughly one quarter the distance of the Sun from the centre of the Milky Way. The scale of the Lattice, while mind-numbing, will come in handy when we feel the need for speed. Here's the view looking outward from a point near the centre of the Lattice toward one of the faces.

60054 Frankfurt/Main, Germany We introduce algorithms for lattice basis reduction that are improvements of the famous L3-algorithm. If a random L3-reduced lattice basis b ,b ,...,b n i,j n(n-1)/2 , then the pruned enumeration finds with positive probability a shortest lattice vector. We demonstrate the power of these algorithms by solving random subset sum problems of arbitrary density with 74 and 82 many weights, by breaking the Chor-Rivest cryptoscheme in dimensions 103 and 151 and by breaking Damgard's hash function.
