Introduction to Global Analysis
by
Sergiu Moroianu
These lectures will give an overview of certain problems in Analysis on manifolds which share two common features:
    • They are formulated in terms of spectral properties of differential operators. They are best attacked via pseudo-differential algebras methods.

(At least sketches of) proofs of the results stated will be given. This implies that theorems will not always appear in their most general form.
The analytical core of the course is the theory of classical pseudo-differential operators and its generalizations due to R. Melrose.

Contents
Lecture 1 - Wednesday, Feb. 13th: 10.30-12 Differential operators on sections of vector bundles over manifolds. Basic example: the de Rham differential. Relationship to the Euler characteristic
and the signature. The Hirzebruch signature theorem. Elliptic operators and the index. Elliptic regularity, Sobolev embedding. Lecture 2 - Thursday, Feb. 14th : 10.30-12 Inverting elliptic operators: Pseudo-differential operators. Conormal distributions, wave-front set, pull-back and push-forward.
Complex powers of pseudo-differential operators. Zeta and eta functions, residue trace, determinants.Comparison of the zeta function to the heat kernel trace.

Global Analysis Finds Nearly Half The Earth Is Still Wilderness
December 4, 2002 (Washington, DC) – According to the most comprehensive global analysis ever conducted, wilderness areas still cover close to half the Earth's land, but contain only a tiny percentage of the world's population. More than 200 international scientists contributed to the analysis, which will be published in the book, Wilderness: Earth's Last Wild Places, (University of Chicago Press, 2003).

ABSTRACT: This paper considers a one-sector overlapping-generations model with production. We observe that under standard assumptions on preferences and technology, the perfect-foresight equilibrium violates positivity constraints for large sets of initial conditions. The consideration of the positivity constraints of the consumer enables degenerate equilibrium, a perfect-foresight equilibrium that remains in the trivial steady state from a certain time, to be defined. To correct this unsatisfactory situation, we introduce a mechanism redistributing resources among generations by levying taxes.

Global Analysis in a Predator-Prey System with Nonmonotonic Functional Response
    Shigui Ruan, Dongmei Xiao
Abstract. A predator-prey system with nonmonotonic functional response is considered. Global qualitative and bifurcation analyses are combined to determine the global dynamics of the model. The bifurcation analysis of the model depending on all parameters indicates that it exhibits numerous kinds of bifurcation phenomena, including the saddle-node bifurcation, the supercritical and subcritical Hopf bifurcations, and the homoclinic bifurcation. It is shown that there are different parameter values for which the model has a limit cycle or a homoclinic loop, or exhibits the so-called paradox of enrichment phenomenon. Moreover, a limit cycle cannot coexist with a homoclinic loop for all parameters. In the generic case, the model has the bifurcation of cusp type of codimension 2 (i.e., BogdanovTakens bifurcation) but for some specific parameter values it has a multiple focus of multiplicity at least 2. Introduction
After the splendid coverage of the Perseid event in August 1993 by observations from around the world other showers have been somewhat disregarded for the excitement of the Perseids. Although the weather in central Europe was not favorable for Geminid watches, the well-established net of observers in other parts of Europe, in America, Asia, and Australia delivered a good deal of observations which enabled us to present this analysis. The authors would like to thank the following 133~observers who contributed their observations to this study for their efforts:
    The population index
The individual population indices r were computed according to [1]. To be used in the analysis, the individual magnitude distributions must contain at least five consecutive classes with at least three meteors each, the faintest class being at least 2 magnitudes brighter than the limiting magnitude. The width of the magnitude classes is 1. As the r -value is deduced from linear regression, the correlation coefficient should be larger than 0.98.

nd Order Global Analysis and Simulation of Concentration Dependant Reaction Kinetics
Pro-Kineticist II provides 2 nd order global analysis for spectra-kinetic data. Our previous global analysis application (Pro-K) was able to analyse sets of wavelength kinetic data under common initial conditions, for example a single diode array data set or a sequence of single wavelength repeat shots. With Pro-KII we can now simultaneously analyse complimentary data sets gathered under different initial conditions, notably reagent concentration or pH. Using 1 st order global analysis, the spectra of A and B cannot both be determined. It is necessary to fix the spectrum of one of the reactants. However, by performing the reaction at two (or more) starting concentrations of A and B and submitting the data to Pro-KII the spectra can now be resolved. A more complex analysis which, by virtue of moving to 2 nd Provision of a rapid equilibrium feature also allows models to include rapid protonations or ligand binding steps. In effect this allows pH dependant data sets to be fully analysed by provision of the pK of both the protonation step and any buffers present in the system. In these systems a fixed pK for the buffer is usually provided (with colourless reactants and products). The protonation step in the chemistry is also represented by an equilibrium which now becomes an optionally fitted parameter. The model would be represented as: Buffer Equilibrium
