Link between abortion and breast cancer dismissed
Global analysis of data finds no association.
26 March 2004 HELEN PEARSON Both breast cancer and abortion are sensitive issues. Having an abortion does not increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer, concludes a comprehensive analysis of studies from around the world. The authors hope to lay to rest a highly charged debate. The link between breast cancer and abortion has been hotly debated for a quarter of a century. Some studies found that women who experience either spontaneous miscarriage or induced abortion are more likely to develop breast cancer later in life, and such studies were often used to support the pro-life movement. Other studies have seen no evidence for a link between the two. Now Valerie Beral of Cancer Research UK in Oxford and her collaborators have collected and reanalysed the raw data from more than 80,000 women in 53 studies worldwide. They found no connection between abortion and breast cancer, they report in the Lancet . "Scientifically, it really lays this issue to rest," Beral says.

(TH/P3-14) Kinetic Global Analysis of Alfvén Eigenmodes in Toroidal Plasmas
A. Fukuyama , T. Akutsu
Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan Abstract. Systematic study on low to medium n (toroidal mode number) Alfvén eigenmodes (AE) in tokamaks and helical systems is presented. Linear stability of AE in the presence of energetic ions was studied using the kinetic full-wave code TASK/WM. We have reproduced the destabilizing effect of toroidal co-rotation on TAE for JT-60U parameters. We have found the existence of reversed-shear-induced Alfvén eigenmode (RSAE) which localizes near the q minimum in a reversed magnetic shear configuration. Two kinds of mode structures are identified for energetic particle mode (EPM) below the TAE frequency gap. The coupling to lower-frequency modes such as drift waves and MHD modes as well as the effect of trapped particles are also taken into account. For a helical plasma, the existence of GAE in the central region and TAE in the off-axis region was confirmed. Read the full paper in PDF format.

Global Analysis 30 Years Later
March 25-28, 1998
University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH
Purpose: This meeting looks back to the 1968 AMS Summer Mathematics Institute on Global Analysis. The 1968 meeting was dominated by Smale's lectures on hyperbolic systems, and was a major event in shaping the modern developments of dynamical systems. The 1998 meeting will explore the impact of these lectures on the last 30 years in dynamical systems. Program: This four day conference will mainly consist of hour lectures, but some sessions for shorter contributed papers will be included. Many of the original participants will be plenary speakers. A social event is planned. Funding: This conference is funded by grants from the Taft Foundation and the National Science Foundation. Information: For additional information contact
