Schaums Outline of General Topology > Customer Review #1: If you are a good researcher, this is a good resource!
If you are taking an introductory Topology course, I recommend using this book. It is a little old, and some of the problems are not solved, but it will offer you an advantage when using your class text. You should use Lipschutzs book together with REAs Topology Problem Solver to give you full study advantage when taking on this most difficult subject. With some moderate study, you should do better on your assignements! In mathematics general topology or point set topology is that branch of topology which studies elementary properties of topological spaces and structures defined on them. Other main branches of topology are algebraic topology and differential topology It's in general topology that basic notions, such as: are defined and theorems about them are proved. Other more advanced notions also appear, but are usually related directly to these fundamental concepts, without reference to other branches of mathematics.

Exercise 28: [Bogus Exercise] It reads: But the intersection of A will always yield the least upper bound, unless this intersection is empty, in which case there are no upper bounds. [David Eger] Proposition 0.25: [typo] It should read and suppose S is an initial segment of A not and suppose S is an intial segment of S as it reads in early prints. [David Eger]

Theorem 2.27: [Vacuous Logic] In the last line of the proof, I fail to see how T being a subset of Tb is a result of the fact that B is a subset of T. Usually, I am accustomed to seeing proofs of T being a subset of Tb being in the form t in T implies t in Tb. [David Eger] Example 2.28 (f): [Vacuous Logic]
Suppose x is in B(m,n) intersect B(p,q). Then x is in B(mp,x) subset of B(m,n) intersect B(p,q).

Available from the textbook annex. Homework: Homework will be assigned on a (mostly) weekly basis, and will usually be due on Wednesdays. Exams: There will be one midterm exam in class on November 4, and one final exam, on December 9. Problem Session: Mondays 2:30 - 3:20 in LGRT 1322. Grades: Homework will count for 30% of the final grade, the midterm also counts for 30%, and the final counts for 40%. Course goals: The language of basic topology, commonly called "point-set topology", is important to many fields of mathematics, including differential geometry, algebraic topology, and many areas of analysis. We will learn all the basic definitions that allow you to say interesting things in the language, together with lots of examples to help develop intuition about what the defintions really mean. Although some examples in topology are "exotic", and are mainly useful to remind you that your intution doesn't tell you the whole story, we will spend more time on examples that have real mathematical content. Topics: We will cover the most important topics from Chapters 2,3,4,and 7 of Munkres. Hopefully we will have time to start chapter 9 (the fundamental group) before the semester ends.
