Welcome to the Banach Space Bulletin Board. This server has links to preprints of papers in Banach space theory and related fields and archives of messages that have been sent to all subscribers to the associated list. In addition, the Recent section lists the most recent papers that have been added to the archive. The archive itself is a subset of the functional analysis section of the math archive at Los Alamos. The list has recently switched software from majordomo to mailman. This may result in some temporary problems and some adjustments for users.

    Functional Analysis VII
    Dubrovnik, Croatia, September 17-26, 2001
Functional Analysis VII is a conference and a postgraduate school on functional analysis with several more or less independent parts dealing with various aspects of functional analysis (operator algebras, probability theory, harmonic analysis, representation theory). The program will include series of lectures, single lectures and short communications. The conference will be held in Dubrovnik, September 17-26, 2001 at the Inter-University Centre . This will be the seventh meeting; the first six were held in 1981, 1985, 1989, 1993, 1997 and 1999. Most of the main lectures were published in Springer Verlag Lecture Notes (issues 948 and 1242) and in Various Publication Series of the Aarhus University (issues 40, 43 and 44). Functional analysis
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Functional analysis is that branch of mathematics and specifically of analysis which is concerned with the study of spaces of functions . It has its historical roots in the study of transformations such as the Fourier transform and in the study of differential and integral equations. The word ' functional ' goes back to the calculus of variations , implying a function whose argument is a function. Its use in general has been attributed to Volterra In the modern view, functional analysis is seen as the study of complete normed vector spaces over the real or complex numbers. Such spaces are called Banach spaces . An important example is Hilbert space , where the norm arises from an inner product . These spaces are of fundamental importance in the mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics . More generally, functional analysis includes the study of Fréchet spaces and other topological vector spaces not endowed with a norm. An important object of study in functional analysis are the continuous linear operators defined on Banach and Hilbert spaces. These lead naturally to the definition of

    50. Schmidt
Main research was functional analysis, doctorate was obtained under Hilbert's supervision, main interest was in integral equations and Hilbert space, best remembered for the GramSchmidt orthogonalisation process.

Erhard Schmidt 's father was a medical biologist called Alexander Schmidt. Erhard's university career followed a pattern which was common in Germany at this time, namely that students studied at several different universities as their course progressed. He attended his local university in Dorpat before going to Berlin where he studied with Schwarz Hilbert 's supervision. His doctoral dissertation was entitled and was a work on integral equations . The main ideas of this thesis appeared in Schmidt's 1907 paper which we describe below. After obtaining his doctorate he went to Bonn where he was awarded his habilitation in 1906. After leaving Bonn, Schmidt held positions in Zurich, Erlangen and Breslau before he was appointed to a professorship at the University of Berlin in 1917. The appointment was to fill the chair left vacant by Schwarz 's retirement.

  • Functional Analysis - Dave Rusin; The Mathematical Atlas
A short article designed to provide an introduction to functional analysis, which views the big picture in differential equations, for example, thinking of a differential operator as a linear map on a large set of functions. Thus this area becomes the study of (infinite-dimensional) vector spaces with some kind of metric or other structure, including ring structures (Banach algebras and C-* algebras for example). Appropriate generalizations of measure, derivatives, and duality also belong to this area. The Problem The Site The site of Chiripa is located in the community of the same name, on the northern littoral margin of the Taraco Peninsula. Chiripa lies on the road between Taraco and Lukurmata, and is approximately equidistant from these two towns. It is about 20 km from the site of Tiwanaku. The most conspicuous architectural remnant at the site is the monticulo, a large mound which was originally constructed in the Formative period, and later remodeled in Tiwanaku V times. The monticulo was excavated by Bennett (1936) and later by Kidder (1956) and Browman, and has served as the type site for the local Formative ceramic sequence. Apart from the monticulo
