Functional Analysis Carl Jung developed psychological types based on the four functions (Feeling, Thinking, iNtuition and Sensing) and the two attitudes (Extraversion and Introversion). (There is, in my experience, a good deal of confusion, especially among those without some grounding in psychological type, about the nature of these functions and attitudes. The words don't necessarily mean what we expect them to mean, and caution should be used in applying common usage to these terms if this system is to be of value in the understanding of basic temperaments.) In this system there are eight basic types , each designated by its dominant (defining, controlling, pre-eminent) function: Symbol Jungian Type Myers-Briggs Types Fe Extraverted Feeling ESFJ ENFJ Fi Introverted Feeling ISFP INFP Ne Extraverted Intuition ENFP ENTP Ni Introverted Intuition INFJ INTJ Se Extraverted Sensing ESFP ESTP Si Introverted Sensing ISFJ ISTJ Te Extraverted Thinking ESTJ ENTJ Ti Introverted Thinking ISTP INTP
Jung developed these types within a mental illness model. He spoke of functions being

Theory of Functions and related areas
Return to start of tour Up to Mathematical Analysis Here we mean the study of vector spaces of functions. This can include the abstract study of topological vector spaces as well as the study of particular spaces of interest, including attention to their bases (e.g. Fourier Analysis), and linear maps on them (e.g. Integral Transforms).
  • 46: Functional analysis views the big picture in differential equations, for example, thinking of a differential operator as a linear map on a large set of functions. Thus this area becomes the study of (infinite-dimensional) vector spaces with some kind of metric or other structure, including ring structures (Banach algebras and C-* algebras for example). Appropriate generalizations of measure, derivatives, and duality also belong to this area.
  • 42: Fourier analysis studies approximations and decompositions of functions using trigonometric polynomials. Of incalculable value in many applications of analysis, this field has grown to include many specific and powerful results, including convergence criteria, estimates and inequalities, and existence and uniqueness results. Extensions include the theory of singular integrals, Fourier transforms, and the study of the appropriate function spaces. This heading also includes approximations by other orthogonal families of functions, including orthogonal polynomials and wavelets.
  • 43: Abstract harmonic analysis : if Fourier series is the study of periodic real functions, that is, real functions which are invariant under the group of integer translations, then abstract harmonic analysis is the study of functions on general groups which are invariant under a subgroup. This includes topics of varying level of specificity, including analysis on Lie groups or locally compact Abelian groups. This area also overlaps with representation theory of topological groups.

Functional Analysis at
While it is impossible to give an exact definition of such a vital area as Functional Analysis, its leitmotiv is the amalgamation of algebraic and topological structures: vector spaces endowed with topologies, operators between these vector spaces, and algebras of operators. These structures are found at the core of many fields inside and outside of Mathematics, for example Quantum Physics, Engeneering, Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis. In addition, there are modern day interactions with fields such as Algebraic Topology, Finance, Geometry, Probability and Signal Processing. Our Functional Analysis group has diverse interests: Banach spaces, operator spaces, C*-algebras, von Neumann algebras, nonlinear functional analysis. Furthermore members of our group are interested in applications to probability theory, free probability theory, wavelets, mathematical finance, convex geometry.

By Philip W Ingham and Tanya T Whitfield Free Sample Topics Genetics: The Functional Analysis of Genomes is an introduction to the fundamental concepts and methodologies of genetic analysis and their application in the context of post-genomic research. The first three chapters introduce genes, chromosomes and genetic variation and the relationship between genotype and phenotype, and the fourth describes the key features of the most widely used model organisms, highlighting the particular advantages of each and explaining their relevance to the study of human biology. The next four chapters discuss the ways in which mutations can be identified, isolated and mapped. Later chapters deal with the methods used to clone genes identified by mutations and the manipulation of cloned genes in vivo , as well as the dissection of pathways by epistasis analysis and the uses of suppressor and enhancer screens to identify novel components of known pathways. The authors emphasize throughout the conservation of genes and the biochemical and cellular processes that they control, and the final chapter presents specific examples of models for human clinical conditions.

    INTRODUCTION
    Original Study
In 2001, the Network Development and MARC Standards Office (NDMSO) at the Library of Congress commissioned a study to examine MARC 21 from several perspectives:
    • the FRBR model the AACR cataloging code model a set of user tasks that MARC 21 might logically support
The study used the models from IFLA's Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and the related Logical Structure of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules and was carried out by the consultant who was largely responsible for those studies, Tom Delsey, of Thomas J. Delsey Consulting. By sponsoring this analysis and making it available, the Network Development and MARC Standards Office and others hoped to use the information when analyzing or making decisions relating to format maintenance, system implementation, and data sharing. As a result, the study has proven to be an important tool for the continuing development of the MARC 21 standards.
    Current Revised and Updated Edition
Since the study was first commissioned, NDMSO has updated it to include new and revised data elements stemming from MARC 21 updates 2 (October 2001) and 3 (October 2002). In 2003, the study was reformatted to allow for easier browsing and use. Please note that NDMSO does not plan to maintain the "Mapping of AACR to MARC Data Elements" table because the AACR study is further being elaborated on and thus, it is impossible to maintain accurately.
