Zooming Sierpinski This project is a National Science Foundation sponsored project designed to help secondary school and college teachers of mathematics bring contemporary topics in mathematics (chaos, fractals, dynamics) into the classroom, and to show them how to use technology effectively in this process. It is directed by Robert L. Devaney of the Department of Mathematics at Boston University. At this point, there are a number of Java applets available at this site for use in teaching ideas concerning chaos and fractals. There are also several interactive papers designed to help teachers and students understand the mathematics behind such topics as iterated function systems (the chaos game) and the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. If you wish to have information about the dynamical systems group at Boston University, you are in the wrong place. Click here to go there.
Available at this site:

Early Experiments Showed Promise

By the end of my first year, I had managed to produce and exhibit 8" x 10" digital black and white prints that could be hung side-by-side with conventional, chemically processed gelatin silver prints. But I could not exceed that size without displaying an obvious difference. I did not offer digital prints for sale however, because I was certain that the life expectancy of these early efforts would be rather short-probably less than five years.
Getting back to my earlier comments, however, It is important to say that my success in using "pro-sumer" digital images is due largely to the capabilities of the software I use. No one could use the raw file produced by the camera to achieve the same effects.

I wrote this brief tutorial to explain, in simple terms, how the Mandelbrot set and Julia sets are generated. This document provides an informal introduction to these subjects, and is only intended to be a starting point to learn more about fractals and fractal geometry.

Inspiring and educating people about fractals, Chaos Theory and the interconnectedness of complex systems.
http://www.fractalfoundation.org
...is to educate and inspire people about mathematics, art, science, chaos theory and nature. We focus particularly on efforts to reach young people with our educational programs , and we also connect with adults through our scholarship and art sponsorship programs.
We believe that understanding the Principles of Chaos Theory - which are so beautifully illustrated by fractals - is essential to harmonious and sustainable living. No longer is it safe to assume that the cultural, economic and ecological systems in which we live are discrete, linear, disconnected. Rather, we must begin teaching ourselves and our children that the World is a non-linear, unpredictable, interconnected complex system. This radical new paradigm, only recently realized in the new science of Chaos Theory, is still virtually absent from conventional education. The Fractal Foundation seeks to bring these new ways of thinking into the mainstream.
The Fractal Foundation educates people about Chaos Theory and Fractals and encourages participation in art, mathematics, and computer technology by:
  • Providing educational materials, presentations and software to school children (K-12), teaching them to explore fractals themselves.

http://www.bcpl.net/~sullivan/modules/fractals/

Teacher Resource
You could be spending the summer as an intern with MegaGraphics . Over 250 students applied and you are among the final 10 and only two will be chosen. If selected, you will be flown to California to work side by side with our graphic designers on our new project - designing a CD cover for a "soon to be" released movie sound track. As you may already know, we have designed many interactive games, several animated cartoons, designs for wallpaper, etc. Obviously, creativity is an important part of being a graphic designer but a knowledge of Geometry, Algebra and computer programming is a MUST!!!! With this in mind, MegaGraphics will be making the final selection for the summer interns based on their knowledge of a small area of math used by graphic designers - FRACTALS!!
The Task The final phase of the selection process will be a short presentation. In less than a month, a selection committee from MetaGraphics will be coming to Baltimore to see your presentation. To get ready for this presentation, you should bring with you a portfolio and a sample of your creativity - a CD cover.

That dot is obviously way too big to really represent a point. But we'll live with it, if we all just agree what a point really is. A line has one dimension - length. It has no width and no height, but infinite length. Again, this model of a line is really not very good, but until we learn how to draw a line with width and infinite length, it'll have to do. A plane has two dimensions - length and width, no depth. It's an absolutely flat tabletop extending out both ways to infinity. Space

Although chaos grew slowly and was often unfavorably viewed its early stages, scientists now perform active research in many areas of the field. Presently, there are several journals dedicated solely to the study of chaos. This paper is intended to merely highlight a few of the more interesting aspects in the field of chaos. Click on it to pause it. Original code was written in c so this is just an easy port.
  • Well I have now speeded the code up a few rounds (no more flaots speed sorta 35 % better) (the size is now 256 * 256 pixels (instead of 200* 200)) (961011) So I found another little optimization for this problem and implemented it (no bigger change) but will gain a few % in speed. (961018) Cleaned the code and made it more responsive. fixed the transparent middle to be black (much more beutiful:-). spedup a few more % =) (970527). Used my julia code to make a fast mandelbrot-generator that is what I consider to be fast enough.. (970614)

After Jehovah and my family, (husband of 40 years, 4 children, 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren) I have things that I love. We all do it - zero in on a particular specialty, whether it's alive or inanimate.
We collect it, we study it, we watch it, we make it, we plant and weed it. And most important, WE LOVE DOING IT.
I hope to share some of my loves with you and hear about what you are especially fond of in your world. My favorite animal is the CAT , whether it is my own, or the big jungle cats of the world. And I use my extensive garden for flowers to adopt to all the wonderful things one can do with them. You will see the cats and flowers all through the linkware, the screensavers, the adoptions and all the other graphic fun that I have and offer to you. Wander through my virtual rooms and outside in the yard.
Adopt some goodies, get some new linkware, exciting screensavers, store specials, and have fun on your way.
Enjoy!
All of my websets are of my own making, and you can share through the graphics pages
. Most of the photos involved in my pages are originals from my archives, or my digital camera more recently. I have learned much from the groups I have joined and the PSP tubes that have generously been shared. I will try hard to give credit where credit is due. 178. Introduction To Fractals: Infinity, Self-Similarity And Recursion
Introduction to fractals Infinity, SelfSimilarity and Recursion. Abstract. The fractals generated here all start with simple curves made from line segments.
http://www.shodor.org/interactivate/lessons/frac1.html
Introduction to Fractals:
Infinity, Self-Similarity and Recursion
Abstract
This lesson is designed to get students to think about several of the concepts from fractals, including recursion and self similarity. The mathematical concepts of line segments, perimeter, area and infinity are used, and skill at pattern recognition is practiced. The fractals generated here all start with simple curves made from line segments. They display the curiosities that intrigued the mathematicians looking at infinity at the turn of the century. The Hilbert curves demonstrate that a seemingly 1 dimensional curve can fill a 2-d space, and the Koch snowflake demonstrates that a 1-d curve can be infinitely long and surround a finite area.
Objectives
Upon completion of this lesson, students will:
  • have seen a variety of line deformation fractals
  • have developed a sense of infinity, self-similarity and recursion
  • have practiced their fraction, pattern recognition, perimeter and area skills
Standards
The activities and discussions in this lesson address the following NCTM standards Algebra Understand patterns, relations, and functions
