For centuries mathematicians rejected complex figures, leaving them under a single description: formless. For centuries geometry was unable to describe trees, landscapes, clouds, and coastlines. However, in the late 1970s a revolution of our perception of the world was brought by the work of Benoit Mandelbrot. He introduced and developed the theory of fractals figures that were truly able to describe these shapes. The theory was continued to be used in a variety of applications. Out website will show fractals importance in areas ranging from special TV effects to economy and biology. Besides applications it will contain a course on fractals, making the user familiar with topics of various difficulties. The website will have an enhanced section on generating fractals, and the user will have a chance to create fractals using a Java applet.     Fractals An Introduction The purpose of this lesson is to learn very simple methods to construct fractals, to do and practice some math, to appreciate the beauty of fractals, and finally to have fun with math. The lesson includes several Java applets for hands-on construction and interaction with simple fractals. Lets start with definitions. In very simple terms, fractals are geometrical figures that are generated by starting with a very simple pattern that grows through the application of rules. In many cases, the rules to make the figure grow from one stage to the next involve taking the original figure and modifying it or adding to it. This process can be repeated recursively (the same way over and over again) an infinite number of times. The fractals' growth mechanism can be visualized very easily with a simple example. Start with a + sign and grow it by adding a half size + in each of the four line ends. Repeat the exact same process recursively as many times as desired. We'll call this the Plusses fractal: Notice how the + sign grows into a rhombus (popularly known as diamond) in very few simple steps. Further in the lesson we'll count the number of +'s in each of the stages to see how quickly its complexity grows.

    What is a fractal?
    From the Fractal FAQ:
      "A fractal is a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be subdivided in parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole. Fractals are generally self-similar and independent of scale."
      "There are many mathematical structures that are fractals; e.g. Sierpinski triangle, Koch snowflake, Peano curve, Mandelbrot set, and Lorenz attractor. Fractals also describe many real-world objects, such as clouds, mountains, turbulence, and coastlines, that do not correspond to simple geometric shapes." This Fractal FAQ was created and edited by Ken Shirriff through September 26, 1994. The current editor is Ermel Stepp.
    Alan Beck writes:
      "Basically, a fractal is any pattern that reveals greater complexity as it is enlarged. Thus, fractals graphically portray the notion of 'worlds within worlds' which has obsessed Western culture from its tenth-century beginnings."
      Beck further explains that when we look very closely at patterns that are Euclidean, the shapes look more and more like straight lines, but that when you look at a fractal up close you see more and more details.

It's very simple and right now, a work in progress. The ScalingPlanner This tool is designed to help you get the maximum quality out of your files when scaling with Genuine Fractals. The Scanner Planner The ScannerPlanner is designed to help you make decisions regarding scanning an image which will be used at a larger size. This tool will help you work with a smaller file for image manipulation, color correction, etc., which will, at the end of the editing/production process, be scaled to a larger size for output. It is designed to help you make decisions in finding the optimum source file size when you know what your final, target size will be. It is not restricted to this specific use, however.
