Theme and Purpose of the Workshop
The goal of the meeting is to spread and to advance categorical methods and their application amongst researchers working in three overlapping areas of algebra, namely in the study of (I) algebraic structures in monoidal categories and their classical examples, such as Hopf, Frobenius, and Azumaya algebras, and others, particularly those occurring in quantum field theory, (II) Galois theory vis-a-vis Grothendieck's descent theory, as well as the general theory of separability and decidability, applied particularly to the structures mentioned in (I), (III) homological algebra of non-abelian structures, such as groups, rings and (associative or Lie) algebras, and its extension to the structures mentioned in (I).

During the Fall of 2002 the Fields Institute will hosts a thematic program devoted to fostering the interaction between these two areas. Internationally recognized experts from both disciplines will be on site from September 2002 through to December 2002. The format of the program will include at least two short, but intense thematic workshops. One will focus on set theoretic techniques in the theory of

The Casimir Effect: Physical Manifestations of Zero Point Energy

Zero-point fluctuations in quantum fields give rise to observable forces between material bodies, the so-called Casimir forces. In these lectures I present the theory of the Casimir effect, primarily formulated in terms of Green's functions. There is an intimate relation between the Casimir effect and van der Waals forces. Applications to conductors and dielectric bodies of various shapes will be given for the cases of scalar, electromagnetic, and fermionic fields. The dimensional dependence of the effect will be described. Finally, we ask the question: Is there a connection between the Casimir effect and the phenomenon of sonoluminescence?

Research Interests: Baker's Theorem on the linear independence of logarithms of algebraic numbers has been the key to a vast range of developments in number theory over the past thirty years. Amongst the most significant are applications to the effective solution of Diophantine equations, to the resolution of class-number problems, to the theory of p-adic L-functions and especially, through works of Masser and Wüstholz, to many deep aspects of arithmetical algebraic geometry. The theory continues to be a source of much fruitful research to the present day.

Description of Workshop
Nonlinear phenomena and the formation of spatio-temporal patterns play an increasingly important role in current research on partial differential equations. Progress in the past quarter-century in the development of equivariant bifurcation theory and the theory of mode interactions and deterministic chaos has made possible a better understanding of spatio-temporal patterns in a wide variety of physical and biological contexts. This Workshop will contribute to the Thematic Program along this important direction of current research and will complement the related Workshop on Patterns in Physics, November 14-18, 2003

This was the year that I saw my first UFO. The object was hovering over the Manukau Harbour, Auckland City, New Zealand, in the early evening twilight, and carried out manoeuvres that no known man-made vehicle could accomplish at that time. The thing, whatever it was, had an intensely brilliant white light, with a smaller glowing red light some distance from it, and for about twenty minutes held myself and other witnesses spellbound as it went through a series of right angle turns, then disappeared straight up into a clear evening sky. Ever since that time I have collected every bit of information available on the UFO phenomena. During my thousands of hours of flying I have searched the skies constantly and been rewarded with many other sightings. As time went on I was informed by many other pilots in New Zealand that they too were sighting objects for which they could find no explanation. It became obvious that either we were being observed by some sort of advanced vehicles coming in from outer space, or that some scienfic group on earth had discovered a principle of physics unknown to the rest of us, and that secret research was being carried out.
