12: Field theory and polynomials
Field theory considers sets, such as the real number line, on which all the usual arithmetic properties hold - those governing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The study of multiple fields through Galois theory is important for the study of polynomial equations, and thus has applications to number theory and group theory. Tools in this area can also be used to show certain Euclidean geometry constructions are impossible, and that certain functions have no elementary antiderivative! Specifically, a field is a commutative ring in which every nonzero element is assumed to have a multiplicative inverse. Examples include the real number field R, the complex numbers C, the rational numbers Q, finite fields (the Galois fields with p^n elements for some prime p), the p-adic numbers Q_p, and various fields of functions such as the collection of meromorphic entire functions. All these examples are of characteristic zero except the finite fields (if there is a finite set of 1's which add to zero, the cardinality of the smallest such set is the characteristic, a prime). Some themes of field theory are then immediately apparent.

Lecture 3. CHEM1902 (C 10K) Coordination Chemistry In the ionic CFT, it is assumed that the ions are simple point charges . When applied to alkali metal ions containing a symmetric sphere of charge, calculations of energies are generally quite successful. The approach taken uses classical potential energy equations that take into account the attractive and repulsive interactions between charged particles (that is, Coulomb's Law interactions). Electrostatic Potential is proportional to q * q /r where q and q are the charges of the interacting ions and r is the distance separating them. This leads to the correct prediction that large cations of low charge, such as K and Na , should form few coordination compounds. For transition metal cations that contain varying numbers of d electrons in orbitals that are NOT spherically symmetric, however, the situation is quite different. The shape and occupation of these d-orbitals then becomes important in an accurate description of the bond energy and properties of the transition metal compound. To be able to understand and use CFT then, it is essential to have a clear picture of the shapes (angular dependence functions) of the d-orbitals.

Unified Field Theory Unified field theory, in particle physics, is an attempt to describe all fundamental forces and the relationships between elementary particles in terms of a single theoretical framework. Forces can be described by fields that mediate interactions between separate objects. In the mid-19th century James Clerk Maxwell formulated the first field theory in his theory of electromagnetism. Then, in the early part of the 20th century, Albert Einstein developed general relativity, a field theory of gravitation. Later, Einstein and others attempted to construct a unified field theory in which electromagnetism and gravity would emerge as different aspects of a single fundamental field. They failed, and to this day gravity remains beyond attempts at a unified field theory. At subatomic distances, fields are described by quantum field theories, which apply the ideas of quantum mechanics to the fundamental field. In the 1940s quantum electrodynamics (QED), the quantum field theory of electromagnetism, became fully developed. In QED, charged particles interact as they emit and absorb photons (minute packets of electromagnetic radiation), in effect exchanging the photons in a game of subatomic "catch." This theory works so well that it has become the prototype for theories of the other forces. During the 1960s and '70s particle physicists discovered that matter is composed of two types of basic building blockthe fundamental particles known as quarks and leptons. The quarks are always bound together within larger observable particles, such as protons and neutrons. They are bound by the short-range strong force, which overwhelms electromagnetism at subnuclear distances. The leptons, which include the electron, do not "feel" the strong force. However, quarks and leptons both experience a second nuclear force, the weak force. This force, which is responsible for certain types of radioactivity classed together as beta decay, is feeble in comparison with electromagnetism.

Some of the most spectacular applications of representation theory of infinite-dimensional algebras are related to recent developments in mathematical physics.
Physicists have recently begun to study perturbations of conformal field theories in the hopes of using the rich structure of CFT for understanding more general integrable quantum field theories. The study of conformal field theory in dimensions greater than two is also under way, and surprising connections have been found between these theories and string theory (AdS/CFT correspondence).
Infinite-dimensional algebras have also been used in the recent years in the theory of exactly solved models. It turned out that quantum deformations of the enveloping algebras of the affine Kac-Moody algebras, the Virasoro algebra, and the W-algebras may be realized as dynamical symmetry algebras of various lattice models, and hence their representation theory has important applications. Infinite-dimensional Lie algebras also play a central role in the study of integrable systems, such as those associated to the KdV equation and other soliton hierarchies. These integrable systems appear in the study of the Gromov-Witten invariants of algebraic manifolds. The Virasoro conjecture, in particular, indicates the relevance of infinite-dimensional algebras in this area.

The search for a quantum field theory
"[Renormalization is] just a stop-gap procedure. There must be some fundamental change in our ideas, probably a change just as fundamental as the passage from Bohr's orbit theory to quantum mechanics. When you get a number turning out to be infinite which ought to be finite, you should admit that there is something wrong with your equations, and not hope that you can get a good theory just by doctoring up that number." Paul Adrian Maurice Dirac (in a 1970's radio interview) Quantum Field Theory purports to be the most fundamental of sciences in that it concerns the ultimate constituents of matter. The term "quantum field theory" is used interchangeably with "particle physics" and "high energy physics" on the grounds that the experimental support for this theory comes from expensive experiments involving high-energy beams of particles. Although such multi-billion-dollar experiments are needed to push the boundaries, the theories of course claim to be universal, and should apply equally to the familiar and everyday world. Current practitioners in the field will no doubt bemoan the fact that taxpayers of the world are increasingly less willing to find the money to pay for this esoteric study. Do they really care whether there are Higgs particles or heavier flavours of quarks? Probably not. Why not? Because it really makes no difference to their own lives. Their message is clear: study theology, philosophy or "useless" branches of science if you will, but if the cost is more than a few academic salaries, blackboards and chalk, then don't expect us to pay.

Information Interaction Design is the intersection of the disciplines of Information Design, Interaction Design, and Sensorial Design. Information Design's roots are in publishing and graphic design, although few people in these industries intentionally practice them. Information Design addresses the organization and presentation of data: its transformation into valuable, meaningful information. While the creation of this information is something we all do to some extent, it has only recently been identified as a discipline with proven processes that can be employed or taught. Unfortunately, there are few resources for learning about the practices of Information or Interaction Design. Interaction Design, which is essentially story-creating and telling, is at once both an ancient art and a new technology. Media have always effected the telling of stories and the creation of experiences, but currently new media offer capabilities and opportunities not yet addressed in the history of interaction and performance. In particular, the demands of interactivity are often misunderstood by all but the most experienced storytellers and performers. How these skills are expressed through interactive technologies and what demands and interests audiences will have for these remains to be understood. Consequently, there are also few sources of information about these issues and the techniques used to meet them. This is new territory that is desperate for some new ideas and cogent explanations. It is also the most critical component to the success of interactive products.
