Gaspard Monge became the later in his life and he is sometimes known by this name. His father was Jacques Monge, a merchant who came originally from Haute-Savoie in southeastern France. Gaspard's mother, whose maiden name was Jeanne Rousseaux, was a native of Burgundy and it was in the town of Beaune in Burgundy that Gaspard was brought up. Around the time that Gaspard was born Beaune, after a period of decline, was becoming prosperous again due to the success of the wine trade. Bossut who was the professor of mathematics there. At first Monge's post did not require him to use his mathematical talents, but Monge worked in his own time developing his own ideas of geometry. Bossut was elected to the Bossut explaining that he was writing a work on the evolutes of curves of double curvature. He asked

Take Differential Geometry at ETSU this summer! The East Tennessee State University Department of Mathematics will offer a graduate level class in Differential Geometry (MATH 5310) Term I of Summer 2002 (June 3 - July 8). The class will be held in Sam Wilson Hall, Room 302 at 11:20-12:50 Monday through Friday. This will be a somewhat unconventional introduction to differential geometry. The class meets for only 5 weeks and the instructor, Dr. Robert Gardner, will emphasize applications. Approximately half of the class time will be spent on Einstein's theories of special and general relativity . Therefore the target audience will be physics and mathematics majors. The class will use as a text "Differential Geometry and Relativity Theory, An Introduction" by Richard L. Faber, Monographs and Textbooks in Pure and Applied Mathematics, Volume 75 Marcel Dekker, Inc. (ISBN 0-8247-1749-X). For a general introduction to relativity theory, we will use as a supplemental text "Relativity: The Special and the General Theory" by Albert Einstein, available from

Differential Geometry, Dislocations and Einstein's Teleparallelism
Einstein's teleparallel theory discolations we got a very nice tool to understand Einstein's teleparallelism !
Surprisingly, the theory of dislocations showes many similarities with electrodynamics, including a relativistic behaviour of moving dislocations. Not enough here, this 'electromagnetical' behaviour of dislocations was discovered even before the relation to torsion and thus the relation to Einstein's unified theory was revealed - you may believe this is just coincidence, I don't !
Thus Einstein's attempt, after all, may be not that wrong as it seems today.
