One of the common misunderstandings among computer users is a certain faith in the infallibility of numerical computations. That is, if you multiply, say: you may expect to get a result of exactly 1. It is a shock to this faith to find out that, on closer inspection, the result may prove to be something such as 0.9999999999999999 or even 0.99999999923475. This seems to clearly indicate a bug in the system , and it's a bigger shock to find out that, no, that's the way it happens to work (except in computer algebra systems and in bignum systems). This document explains such issues in detail. Table of contents 1 Bits, bytes, nybbles, and unsigned integers

Bits, bytes, nybbles, and unsigned integers
Nearly all computer users understand the concept of a " bit ", or in computer terms, a 1 or value encoded by the setting of a switch. It's not much more difficult to see that if you take two bits, you can use them to represent four unique states If you have three bits, then you can use then to represent eight unique states:

Mathsson i Matteland: Programs for Computer Mathematics for very young children (D3 Project Proposal) This project has the following goals:
  • Develop a set of programs for introducing basic mathematical concepts to children based on story building techniques. Create an international open library of educational programs for children: Math is a universal language.
The results of this project have two primary audiences. The first audience is children of ages 3-13. The second one includes teachers, parents, and other people, who work with children of these ages. If there is enough interest the project can split into two, the resulting sub-projects will focus on the two goals mentioned above in parallel. Requirements Knowledge of computer graphics is preferred, but not required. Suitable Courses

23. Interactive Computer Mathematics
Interactive computer mathematics is a technology that interactively allows humans to learn, apply, develop, visualize and typeset mathematics.
http://www.cs.kun.nl/~henk/Interactivemath.html
Interactive computer mathematics is a technology that interactively allows humans to learn, apply, develop, visualize and typeset mathematics. Eventually this should lead to the next generation of calculators and computer algebra systems, supporting a wide range of mathematical activities. At the Brouwer Institute of Nijmegen University Barendregt's group works on languages, libraries and tools to bootstrap existing systems into the next generation. Thereby the calculus of inductive constructions (lambda calculus with dependent and inductive types) is used as the underlying logical system as implemented in the system Coq. This choice is based on the possibility to develop constructive proofs that provide algorithms for existential statements. See as case studies the Fundamental Theorems of Algebra (every non-constant polynomial over the complex numbers has a zero) and Analysis (differentiation is the inverse of integration for continuous functions). The project is relevant for the `Quest of Correctness'. This Quest decides whether the highest possible standard of correctness can be assigned to properties of mathematical models and their applications. These applications include tools used for construction and verification of software and systems.

CSM
The Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSM) is ORNL's premier source of basic and applied research in high-performance computing, applied mathematics, and intelligent systems. Basic and applied research programs are focused on computational sciences, intelligent systems, and information technologies. Our mission includes working on important national priorities with advanced computing systems, working cooperatively with U.S. Industry to enable efficient, cost-competitive design, and working with universities to enhance science education and scientific awareness. Our researchers are finding new ways to solve problems beyond the reach of most computers and are putting powerful software tools into the hands of students, teachers, government researchers, and industrial scientists.

Open Positions MCS and the UofChicago/Argonne National Laboratory Computation Institute have a variety of positions open for predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers, scientific programmers, graduate students, and undergraduates. Students should also check our Student Opportunities Web site. What's New The 4th Access Grid™ (AG) Retreat will be held June 9-11 in Toronto, Canada. This year’s meeting will be hosted by Ryerson University in their Rogers Communication Center, an ideal venue for collaboration and interaction. The AG Retreats provide an interactive forum for Access Grid community – including developers, node operators, and users - to share recent experiences and research findings, to present ideas for future AG technical directions, and to train and educate AG newcomers. Participants receive updates on topics ranging from AG collaboration experiences to node installation and troubleshooting to AG development directions. The AG Retreats are critical to the continued development, utility, and improvement of AG.

The Living Mathematics Project
``Constructing a new medium for the communication of Mathematics''
A sk any mathematician , and you'll be told - Mathematics is a dynamic, living subject. But for many people, going beyond the static images and formulas of current mathematics texts requires an effort in creative visualization which is often beyond their means. The Living Mathematics Project hosted at SunSITE UBC is working to apply recent advances in computer programming languages and the technology of the World Wide Web to construct a new medium for the communication of Mathematics.
