About Us
In 1965, a separate department of computer sciences was established at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center. The department, which emphasized the solution of conceptual problems, included a wide range of research activities from high-performance scientific computing systems to human factors, algorithm analysis, and multiprocessing. For more than 35 years, IBM Research Labs have established computer science efforts in the technical areas listed to the right. IBM researchers have contributed many key technical innovations including: compiler optimization (FORTRAN), relational database (SQL and DB2), speech recognition (ViaVoice), Reduced Instruction Set Computers (RISC - RS/6000 and Power PC), fractals, scalable parallel systems (RS/6000 SP) and key component technologies for WebSphere.

Natural Language Processing at USC/ISI USC/ISI is an academic research Institute that is part of USC's School of Engineering. Many ISI researchers are also on the faculty and computer science, and likewise, many CS graduate students do their dissertation research at ISI. In Business Week's recent survey of academic information technology research, USC ranked fifth overall, and ISI was called "a star" in its survey of international research institutions. ISI's Intelligent Systems Division is one of the largest university based artificial intelligence groups in the world. The natural language group at ISI is large and growing. At around 30 people, we currently have eight full-time Ph.D. researchers, several other full-time research staff, scientists, numerous M.S. and Ph.D. graduate students, and a large summer intern program. Except for speech recognition and dialogue research, we cover most major areas of Human Language Technology. Other academic natural language groups of comparable size in the US include those at Carnegie-Mellon University, Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Maryland. Research at USC/ISI includes both statistical and knowledge-based/symbolic methods, and most frequently a combination of the two. SUMMER INTERNSHIPS NOW OPEN for 2004!

Graduate Student Receives Fellowship April 15, 2004 PhD. student, Janae Foss, has received a NASA-Harriet G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Award. This award will provide three years of fellowship support allowing Janae to focus on her research. Her project is entitled "Optimizing Time Use When Planning for Autonomous Spacecraft". Most researchers studying planning under uncertainty focus on what to do when things go wrong. Janae, on the other hand, will concentrate on generating plans that will allow autonomous vehicles to maximize their effectiveness by making the best use of extra time that becomes available in the schedule.
