Alife takes yet another approach to exploring the mysteries of intelligence. It has many aspects similar to EC and Connectionism, but takes these ideas and gives them a meta-level twist. Alife emphasizes the development of intelligence through emergent behavior of complex adaptive systems . Alife stresses the social or group based aspects of intelligence. It seeks to understand life and survival. By studying the behaviors of groups of 'beings' Alife seeks to discover the way intelligence or higher order activity emerges from seemingly simple individuals. Cellular Automata and Conway's Game of Life are probably the most commonly known applications of this field. Complex Systems (abbreviated CS) are very similar to alife in the way the are approached, just more general in definition (ie. alife is a type of complex system). Usually complex system software takes the form of a simulator.
These are libraries of code or classes for use in programming within the artificial life field. They are not meant as stand alone applications, but rather as tools for building your own applications.

123. Complex Systems And Their Interdisciplinary Application In Science
complex system is a collective consisting of a large number of individual components that interact in a strongly nonlinear fashion
http://www.math.jyu.fi/research/cosa/cosa.html
The interest in complex systems , i.e. systems consisting of large numbers of simple components with nonlinear interactions, has been increasing rapidly in recent years because of advances in the theory of nonlinear dynamics, the growth of computer simulation power, and the realization of the ubiquity of such systems in natural and social settings. The area of complex systems modeling by its nature spans many disciplines, with solid analytical roots in mathematics and (statistical) physics, and both applications and fundamental modeling ideas stemming from, e.g., ecology, population genetics, and economics. The field also has a strong computer science component, having largely been made possible by the huge increase in numerical simulation capabilities, and conversely contributing novel approaches to the solution of difficult computational problems. The fragmentation of present-day science makes it difficult to bring these subjects into the productive interaction that this area both requires and rewards. The COSA project has since 1996 been working towards creating a world-class interdisciplinary research consortium in the field of complex systems modeling. Each of the participating groups has done leading work in its own area, and has its own basic funding for this; the COSA project accomodates genuinely multidisciplinary research activities by means of a select group of jointly advised graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, medium-to-long-term foreign visitors, summer schools and other intensive courses on complex systems modeling methodology, and a regular workshop series.

    133. Welcome To L-System 4
A program which uses text based instructions (seed files) to build complex 3D objects.
    http://www.geocities.com/tperz/L4Home.htm
    People have
visited my page! L-System 4 is a program which uses text based instructions (seed files) to build complex objects. The program includes several useful functions, including an integrated viewer and a random seed file generator. These objects can then be exported in DXF file format for use in programs such as TrueSpace, Bryce, etc. L-System 4 is a Windows based implementation of Laurens Lapre's LParser DOS based program. The project was conceived and supported by Bryan Smith, founder of Thinkpiece.com. Sadly, Thinkpiece.com is no more...I'm sorry to see it go. If you didn't visit the site, you missed out on some very interesting computer based art. I placed L-System 4 here in Geocities so that the program could have a home where it could be downloaded via the web. I'm working over in Saudi Arabia and we don't have the greatest Internet accessibility, hence Geocities. The program comes complete with installation instructions as well as an extensive program Help File, and model seed files. You'll need something like Winzip to extract the file. Just extract the 'l4setup.zip' file to a temporary directory and run setup.exe from there to install the program. Un-installations are clean as L-System does not add any additional files to your Windows System folder. The program is Freeware, the only thing that it will cost you is your time. There are several examples included to help you in your exploration of Lindenmayer systems.
