But this book makes them very clear. It is more geometrical, and has more motivation, than Atiyah and MacDonald INTRODUCTION TO COMMUTATIVE ALGEBRA. It is briefer and more surveyable than Eisenbud COMMUTATIVE ALGEBRA. If you go on in the subject you will certainly need Eisenbuds book. This is a very good starter, and a good companion to Eisenbud if you are learning the material on your own. Perseus Books has done such a terrible job printing it that I am returning my copy. It looks and feels worse than any book I have ever held in my hands. The paper is cheaper than any book I have on my shelf. I can see an empty spot in the glue on the binding. The text itself looks like a second generation photocopy. All of this is a terrible disappointment to me, because everyone I have talked to has loved the content of the book, and I was expecting a good, strong paperback that I could keep for thirty years. This doesnt feel like itll last thirty days. I cant recommend that anyone buy this book. Perhaps if you could get a cheap used copy it would be worth it, but sixty dollars? No. Get something else.

Algebraic Areas of Mathematics Return to start of tour Up to The Divisions of Mathematics The algebraic areas of mathematics developed from abstracting key observations about our counting, arithmetic, algebraic manipulations, and symmetry. Typically these fields define their objects of study by just a few axioms, then consider examples, structure, and application of these objects. We have included here the combinatorial topics and number theory ; each is arguably a distinctive area of mathematics but (as the MathMap suggests) these parts of mathematics, shown in shades of red, share definite affinities. The list on this page includes a rather large number of fields in the MSC scheme. It is also common to interpret the phrase "abstract algebra" in a more narrow sense - to view it as the fields obtained by adding successive axioms to describe the objects of study.
