Commutative algebra emerged during the 19th century at the crossroads of number theory, invariant theory, and algebraic geometry. In the mid 20th century, the field was mostly shaped by a grand fusion with geometry, carried out systematically in the work of such masters as Zariski, Grothendieck, and Hironaka. A recent reintegration of the subject into its number theoretic origins has been most famously illustrated by portions of Wiles' proof of Fermat's Last Theorem.
Other significant influences on present day research in commutative algebra come from the pervading use of homological algebra, and from the ever growing demand and sophistication of computational methods. The meeting proposes to bring together researchers representing the various tendencies described above. Special attention will be paid to presentations of new geometric ideas that could have a potential impact on research in commutative algebra. Persons to contact ?

DECEMBER IS A PEAK SEASON FOR TRAVEL TO INDIA FROM THE U. S. AND EUROPE. SO PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUESTED TO BOOK THEIR TICKETS * EARLIEST* TO AVOID THE RUSH. On the occasion of the first International meeting of the American Mathematical Society in India organised by the Indian Academy of Sciences and Indian National Science Academy at Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore from December 17-21, the Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana felt it would be an ideal opportunity to further its interest in the spread of computational and combinatorial methods in commutative algebra.
The Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana appropriately has taken the lead in developing this frontier area of research in accordance with its traditions begun by its founder, and continued and extended by its present Managing committee. We have successfully organised two workshops in Computational methods in Commutative Algebra so far: The first was jointly with the University of Pune on Commutative Algebra and Invariant theory which it ran in December, 1999, and this was followed up by a workshop jointly with

    Commutative algebra
In abstract algebra commutative algebra is the field of study of commutative rings , their ideals modules and algebras . It is foundational both for algebraic geometry and for algebraic number theory. The subject's real founder, in the days when it was called ideal theory , should be considered to be David Hilbert . He seems to have thought of it (around 1900) as an alternate approach that could replace the then-fashionable complex function theory . In line with his thinking, computational aspects were secondary to the structural. The additional module concept, present in some form in Kronecker's work, is technically an improvement on working always directly on the special case of ideals . Its adoption is attributed to Emmy Noether 's influence. Given the scheme concept, commutative algebra is reasonably thought of as either the local theory or the affine theory of algebraic geometry The general study of rings that are not required to be commutative is known as noncommutative algebra; it is pursued in ring theory , representation theory and in other areas such as Banach algebra theory.

Commutative Algebra, Singularities and Computer Algebra presents current trends in commutative algebra, algebraic combinatorics, singularity theory and computer algebra, and highlights the interaction between these disciplines. Contributions by leading international mathematicians thoroughly discuss topics in: modules theory, integrally closed ideals and determinantal ideals, singularities in projective spaces and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, Groebner and SAGBI basis, and the use of the computer packages Bergman, CoCoA and SINGULAR. Introduction to Commutative Algebra > Customer Review #1: Great book, bad printing

This is a fantastic book in every way but one. Perseus Books has done such a terrible job printing it that I am returning my copy. It looks and feels worse than any book I have ever held in my hands. The paper is cheaper than any book I have on my shelf. I can see an empty spot in the glue on the binding. The text itself looks like a second generation photocopy. All of this is a terrible disappointment to me, because everyone I have talked to has loved the content of the book, and I was expecting a good, strong paperback that I could keep for thirty years. This doesnt feel like itll last thirty days. I cant recommend that anyone buy this book. Perhaps if you could get a cheap used copy it would be worth it, but sixty dollars? No. Get something else.
Introduction to Commutative Algebra > Customer Review #2: A baptism of fire for Algebraic Geometry For the algebra itself, it also gets on well with Rotmans "Galois Theory" and MacDonalds out-of-print introduction to AG, "Algebraic Geometry - Introduction to Schemes", besides being the perfect preamble in commutative algebra to the books of Mumford and Hartshorne. A gem.

Commutative Algebra With a View Toward Algebraic Geometry (Graduate Texts in Mathematics, Vol 150) > Customer Review #1: Superb

If one is interested in taking on a thorough study of algebraic geometry, this book is a perfect starting point. The writing is excellent, and the student will find many exercises that illustrate and extend the results in each chapter. Readers are expected to have an undergraduate background in algebra, and maybe some analysis and elementary notions from differential geometry. Space does not permit a thorough review here, so just a brief summary of the places where the author has done an exceptional job of explaining or motivating a particular concept: (1) The history of commutative algebra and its connection with algebraic geometry, for example the origin of the concept of an "ideal" of a ring as generalizing unique factorization.

Customer Reviews This is often referred to as the standard text on commutative algebra. It is an exceptionally good book on a subject that is normally difficult to get a handle on. Eisenbud's readable book gives intuitive and motivated proofs of even very technical results in commutative algebra, often illustrated with instructive examples, such as the useful figures illustrating embedded primes. A very nice feature is that he gives proofs to all the results in commutative algebra used by Robin Hartshorne's popular "Algebraic Geometry," making them a nice pair of books to read together. I found this to be useful as a reference as well as a text. Most sections are fairly self-contained and many important topics are included in depth. I almost always find that it is the best place to learn any of the material covered. This book belongs on the shelf of anyone learning algebraic geometry, although it will spend plenty of time off the shelf as well. I found this book to be too wordy. Theorems are sometimes stated without proofs then followed by several corollaries with proof, followed finally by the proof of the original theorem. Allusions are made to geometry unfamiliar to some learning the basics of commutative ring theory. A nice book to come back to.

This book is a fair short treatment of algebra and number theory at the graduate level. I am not writing a review of its pedagogical or mathematical merits. My problem with the book is its sells for about [$$$] bucks for 153 pages but the quality of printing is so poor it makes the book hard to read. The pages are not opaque which means print from other pages appears through. The line spacing is narrow and the inner margins are very small. The hard cover seems to me to be of inferior quality ...

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition In abstract algebra Abstract algebra is the field of mathematics concerned with the study of algebraic structures such as groups, rings and fields. The term "abstract algebra" is used to distinguish the field from "elementary algebra" or "high school algebra" which teaches the correct rules for manipulating formulas and algebraic expressions involving real and complex numbers. Historically, algebraic structures usually arose first in some other field of mathematics, were specified axiomatically, and were then studied in their own right in abstract algebra. Because of this, abstract algebra has numerous fruitful connections to all other branches of mathematics.
