Book: "A S INGULAR Introduction to Commutative Algebra"
This book has been written to learn commutative algebra in a new style, taking into account modern developments such as algorithmic and computational aspects. As soon as a new concept is introduced, it is shown how to handle it by computer. The computations are exemplified with the computer algebra system S INGULAR , which was developed by the authors. S INGULAR is a special system for polynomial computation with many features for global as well as for local commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. The book can be used for courses, seminars and as a basis for studying research papers in commutative algebra, computer algebra and algebraic geometry. The text starts with the theory of rings and modules and standard bases with emphasis on local rings and localization. It is followed by the central concepts of commutative algebra such as integral closure, dimension theory, primary decomposition, Hilbert function, completion, flatness and homological algebra. An appendix is devoted to algebraic geometry to show how geometric problems can be understood using commutative algebra. The book includes a CD with a distribution of S INGULAR for various platforms (Unix/Linux, Windows, Macintosh) and which contains all examples and procedures explained in the text.

Also, on Thursday afternoon, April 27, 2000, Melvin Hochster will deliver a very general mathematical lecture (the fourth annual Howard Rowlee Lecture ) at the University of Nebraska. The plenary lecturers are (listed alphabetically): Luchezar Avramov , Purdue University Dale Cutkosky , University of Missouri Mel Hochster , University of Michigan Craig Huneke , University of Kansas Paul Roberts , University of Utah Christel Rotthaus , Michigan State University Hema Srinivasan , University of Missouri Irena Swanson , New Mexico State University We welcome all interested people to attend the conference. We expect to have several 20-minute talks on both days. Ample time will be set aside for informal mathematical interaction. We will extend the conference through Sunday noon if necessary, but at this point we expect to end by Saturday evening. (A decision will be made by the end of March.) Please let us know as soon as possible (preferably by March 22) whether you are likely to attend the conference and whether you are interested in giving a talk. We do not anticipate having funding for participant support, except for local amenities such as continental breakfasts and snacks and perhaps lodging for some graduate students and younger faculty.

Organizers: Mark Green (IPAM, UCLA), Jurgen Herzog (Univ-Gesamthochschule-Essen), Bernd Sturmfels (UC Berkeley)
    Objectives
We are proposing a one-week regular conference (40 participants) on commutative algebra, with an emphasis on interactions with algebraic geometry, polyhedral geometry and combinatorics. This conference would be held in the Spring of 2003 and is part of the Special Program 2002/03 on Commutative Algebra at MSRI Berkeley. It is our intention to invite younger researchers and to also include first-rate mathematicians who work not in commutative algebra proper but in nearby fields. Specifically, we shall invite several leading algebraic geometers. In selecting lectures we will place a particular emphasis on recent developments, applications and future directions. The following is a sample of topics to be discussed in this workshop: toric rings and varieties, Koszul algebras, toric K-theory, exterior algebra methods, arrangements of linear subspaces, Flag varieties and Schubert varieties, Grobner bases, sagbi bases, zero-dimensional schemes, elimination theory, Hilbert schemes, singularities, invariant theory. All of these topics are highly relevant for applications of commutative algebra, both within mathematics and outside of mathematics. To give a concrete example for the usefulness of Commutative Algebra as scientific tool, we wish to mention the recent interaction with Statistics. An introduction to this can be found in the book Giovanni Pistone, Eva Riccomagno and Henry Wynn: Algebraic Statistics: Computational Commutative Algebra in Statistics, Chapman and Hall, Boca Raton, London, 2001, ISBN: 1-58488-204-2 The proposed workshop at Banff deals with fundamental problems whose solutions will benefit practical applications such as those in "Algebraic Statistics".
