Welcome to Manus J. Donahue's Educational Chaos Theory and Fractal Geometry Project
Welcome! I wrote my first explanatory paper on chaos theory about five years ago. The number of interested visitors I get constantly amazes me, some 100,000 in just the last two years alone! In the wake of an economic as well as a technological revolution, it's comforting to see the number of inquisitive people out there interested in understanding (at some basic level) a pure science such as chaos theory. Due to the incredible success of the first essay (numerous online awards as well as a citation in the New York Times ), I have taken it upon myself to write a book that deals with what I feel to be some of the most interesting breakthroughs in theoretical physics to date. In addition to a chapter on chaos theory (approximately four times as long as this introductory essay and linked to below), I have also included chapters on relativity, quantum mechanics, string theory and the universe, and even a section on the applications of such theories and how they're shaping the future of both science and society. The book is a combination of philosophy and theoretical physics (as I believe the two to be related), skipping over the burdensome mathematics of the theories (as most people have better things to do :) in favor of raw explanatory emphasis, interesting anecdotes and helpful examples. The book, roughly entitled News of the Universe: Life at the Edge of Discovery

No offense to the Karate Kid, but fitting Kung Fu Chaos into a particular gaming genre is harder than trying to catch a fly with chopsticks. At its heart, it’s a fighting game. But Kung Fu Chaos could also be described as a party game chock full of mini-games, a la Nintendo’s Mario Party. Throw in some 70’s music, a ton of bad puns, chop-socky humor, cartoony, bobble-headed characters and what you have is Kung Fu Chaos, which may be best described as a solid fighter that likes to party hearty. This game is chaotic Kung Fu brawling at its finest. The premise of the game is that you are working on the newest low-budget movie of Golden Marvelous Productions under the creative control of loudmouth Hong Kong fighting flick director Shao Ting, who like his name, reels off one bad pun after another in the game’s cut-scenes that introduce each level. Kung Fu Chaos tries to be funny, it really does. But there are just too many unfunny wisecracks from Shao Ting (Shao Ting = shouting, get it? Yeah, I know not funny) to consider Kung Fu Chaos a humorous game.

Death, Destruction, Mayhem... and That's on a good day!
I've always wondered what it would like to be a cop. I used to think it would just be boring work, walking the beat, paperwork at the desk, eating the occasional donut or two. But if Eidos Interactive's game Urban Chaos is any yardstick, it's a nonstop day of action, blunt weapons, and thugs around every corner. Here's the story: Apparently Y2K madness has hit the metropolis of Union City. Crime, Murder, Arson, and other nasty things have risen over the past few weeks. Solving these problems falls squarely on the shoulders of D'arci Stern, rookie cop. Along with the help of her mysterious compatriot, Roper, she goes out to personally stop the crime wave and whatever horrors lurk as the Millennium draws near. When I first picked up this game, I saw the Eidos' label on the front, and the third person game perspective, and thought "Oh no! Another third person game from Eidos!" (I am a master of the obvious!) You know what that means right? The standard climb-walls-jump-across-chasms-and-beat-the-crap-out-of-anything-that-moves kind of game. When I started playing, I found I was right for the most part. There's the gun aiming system from

    Chaos in the Classroom
    Robert L. Devaney
    Department of Mathematics
    Boston University
Boston, MA 02215 One of the most interesting applications of technology in the mathematics classroom is the fact that it allows teachers to bring many new and exciting topics into the curriculum. In particular, technology lets teachers bring some topics of contemporary interest in research mathematics into both middle school and high school classrooms. The mathematical topics of chaos and fractals are particularly appropriate in this regard. They are timely-many ideas in these fields were first conceived during the students' lifetimes. They are applicable-fields as diverse as medicine, business, geology, art, and music have adopted ideas from these areas. And they are beautiful-there is something in the gorgeous computer generated images of objects such as the Mandelbrot set, Julia sets, the Koch snowflake, and others that capture students' interest and enthusiasm. Therein, however, lies the problem. Many research mathematicians cringe at the sight of ``still another fractal.'' Most often, discussions of chaos and fractals degenerate to simple ``pretty picture shows,'' devoid of any mathematical content. As a consequence, students get the idea that modern mathematics is akin to a video game-lots of computer-generated action, but mindless activity at best.

    Introduction to Chaos
The dictionary definition of chaos is turmoil, turbulence, primordial abyss, and undesired randomness, but scientists will tell you that chaos is something extremely sensitive to initial conditions. Chaos also refers to the question of whether or not it is possible to make good long-term predictions about how a system will act. A chaotic system can actually develop in a way that appears very smooth and ordered.
    Determinism
Sir Isaac Newton Determinism is the belief that every action is the result of preceding actions. It began as a philosophical belief in Ancient Greece thousands of years ago and was introduced into science around 1500 A.D. with the idea that cause and effect rules govern science. Sir Isaac Newton was closely associated with the establishment of determinism in modern science. His laws were able to predict systems very accurately. They were deterministic at their core because they implied that everything that would occur would be based entirely on what happened right before. The Newtonian model of the universe is often depicted as a billiard game in which the outcome unfolds mathematically from the initial conditions in a pre-determined fashion, like a movie that can be run forwards or backwards in time. Determinism remains as one of the more important concepts of physical science today.
