Bondi K-Calculus
In simple terms, Bondi k-calculus is a method of deriving the effects of Einstein's theory of special relativity which requires only basic mathematics, and yet gives all the appropriate results.
Now before all of the 'scientists' click to the next page and dismiss this as a derivation without substance, let me present a few details. The method was created by Sir Hermann Bondi, who not only wrote numerous papers on the theory of relativity, but was also given a professorship at Cambridge University. The derivation presented here is taught in undergraduate and graduate level physics courses around the world. Unfortunately it is rarely taught in High Schools, where its simplicity would benefit all students struggling with the traditional lorentz transformation derivation of relativity.
Lesson 1
As is done in most derivations, let us limit space to a single dimension to spare having to draw four-dimensional figures on a two dimensional screen. In the diagram below, let the vertical axis represent time and the horizontal axis represent space. Then a curve in the diagram represents a point in space which is 'moving'.(As time progresses, the point changes its position). If the curve is a straight line, the point moves at a constant velocity.
Let A and B be two such lines, (representing observers or spaceships, or whatever seems appropriate) which cross at some point. Each observer carries a clock and at the instant they meet, both reset their clocks to 0. As soon as they cross, A begins shining a flashlight at B for a period of time T.

Description This package introduces definitions for tensor calculations in Riemannian Geometry. To begin a calculation the user must specify a Riemannian space by giving: (1) a list of coordinates,
(2) a symmetric matrix of functions of the coordinates (= metric tensor) and
(3) a list of simplification rules (optional). The main routine in the package then computes explicit expressions for all common Riemannian Geometry tensors (Riemann, Ricci, Einstein, Weyl) and tests if the space belongs to any of the following categories: Flat Conformally Flat Ricci Flat Einstein Space or Space of Constant Curvature . Each tensor is stored as a nested list under an appropriate global name. The following functions for operating on these tensors are defined: Raise/Lower indices, Contract (multiple) indices, Covariant Differentiation and Covariant Divergence. These functions, together with the built-in functions Outer (giving tensor products) and Transpose (index rearrangement) provide the necessary tools for performing all common tensor operations on the computer. Several examples of the use of these functions on tensors computed using different metrics are given. Beginning with version 2.5, tensor components can be calculated with respect to an arbitrary frame, and approximate calculations (series expansions) can be carried out. Version 2.7.8 significantly improves these capabilities.

The 2001 LMS Lectures will be given in Aberdeen. This series is held annually: a single speaker gives a course of about 10 expository lectures, examining an important topic in depth, over a five day period. In the 2001 program in Aberdeen there will be two lectures every morning. An associated afternoon programme will be arranged by G. Arone and M. Weiss. The lecture notes will be published in one of the LMS venues. All mathematicians interested in the topic are welcome to attend the lectures. Limited funds are available to support participants. Priority for financial support will be given to research students and mathematicians who would benefit from attending the lectures, but who would otherwise be prevented from attending by financial constraints. For details on financial support and an application form, please see the link below. Interested participants are also encouraged to attend the International Conference in Algebraic Topology which will take place on the Isle of Skye , the week after this lecture series (June 24 - 30 2001). The theme of the conference is Categorical Decomposition Techniques, in which calculus of functors play an important role. The organizers will attempt to reduce registration fees for those who plan to attend both meetings. Details will appear at a later date. The lecture series registration fee will be waived for doctoral students.

Integrals of Trigonometric Functions Exercises Back to Main Page Introduction T rigonometric functions are often omitted in basic calculus courses for students not majoring in the mathematical sciences. However, the sine and cosine functions are extremely useful in modeling cyclical trends, such as the seasonal variation of demand for certain items, or the cyclical nature of recession and prosperity. The four sections we present here are designed with this in mind; we are concerned less with the geometry of triangles than on applications of the trigonometric functions in modeling real life situations. In the first section, we focus on the use of the sine function to model cyclical phenomena, postponing the introduction of the other trigonometric functions to Section 2. Sections 3 and 4 deal with the calculus of these functions. Of particular interest is the tabular approach to integration by parts that we use to deal with integrals of products of trigonometric and exponential functions. We would welcome comments and suggestions for improving this resource further.

The Mathematics Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) established a computerized learning environment, consisting of a classroom with 31 Macintosh Centris 650s and a laboratory with 12 Macintosh LCs, all equipped with Mathematica . Mathematica's notebook feature enables science students to actively learn calculus and differential equations with guided discovery and exploration. The project was funded through a National Science Foundation Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement grant, number DUE-9351896. IUP's project has several significant attributes.
  • The Mathematics Department is fully implementing this curriculum in all sections of its science calculus sequence and in the two-semester differential equations sequence.
  • Eleven faculty, comprising approximately one third of IUP's mathematics faculty, are coinvestigators.
  • The curricular revisions are being coordinated with the science departments at IUP, who are also integrating active learning and technology in their courses. This collaboration, based on common pedagogical goals and software, will bring more scientific applications into mathematics courses and strengthen the use of mathematics in science courses.
  • All students in the Mathematics Department are involved. Mathematics and Applied Mathematics majors are required to take Differential Equations, and Mathematics Education majors have a unit devoted to the project in the teacher preparation course, Computers and Calculators in Secondary Mathematics.
