Therneau, Ph.D. (Biostatistics Division Head) The Division of Biostatistics, part of the Department of Health Sciences Research , has provided consultation on statistical design and analysis for the clinical and laboratory research staff at Mayo since this service was introduced by Joseph Berkson in 1932. The Biostatistics Division is currently staffed with over 120 statisticians (25 Lead/PhD, 47 M.S., 65 B.S.), as well as additional programming and support staff. In addition to general consulting on over 1,000 ongoing investigations, this group provides core statistical support for a number of major projects such as the Mayo Cancer Center and North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG), the Mayo General Clinical Research Center (GCRC), the Rochester Epidemiology Project, the Alzheimer's Disease Center, and Program Projects such as the Mayo Stroke Center and the Mayo Study of Bone Metabolism in Aging. As a consequence, the majority of the Ph.D. statisticians are extramurally supported. The Areas of divisional expertise include, but are not limited to: bioinformatics, survival analysis, clinical trials, survey research, statistical genetics, population research, and outcomes research.
