The Division of Biostatistics, part of the Department of Health Sciences Research , has provided consultation on statistical design and analysis for the clinical and laboratory research staff at Mayo since this service was introduced by Joseph Berkson in 1932. The Biostatistics Division is currently staffed with over 120 statisticians (25 Lead/PhD, 47 M.S., 65 B.S.), as well as additional programming and support staff. In addition to general consulting on over 1,000 ongoing investigations, this group provides core statistical support for a number of major projects such as the Mayo Cancer Center and North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG), the Mayo General Clinical Research Center (GCRC), the Rochester Epidemiology Project, the Alzheimer's Disease Center, and Program Projects such as the Mayo Stroke Center and the Mayo Study of Bone Metabolism in Aging. As a consequence, the majority of the Ph.D. statisticians are extramurally supported. The Areas of divisional expertise include, but are not limited to: bioinformatics, survival analysis, clinical trials, survey research, statistical genetics, population research, and outcomes research.

Biostatistics is the application of statistical techniques to scientific research in health-related fields, including medicine, biology, and public health, and the development of new tools to study these areas. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the field of biostatistics has become an indispensable tool in improving health and reducing illness. Biostatisticians play essential roles in designing studies, analyzing data and creating methods to attack research problems as diverse as
  • the determination of major risk factors for heart disease, lung disease and cancer the testing of new drugs to combat AIDS the evaluation of potential environmental factors harmful to human health, such as tobacco smoke, asbestos or pollutants

Biostatistics Collaboration of Australia
The Biostatistics Collaboration of Australia (BCA)
Addressing the need for highly skilled and better trained biostatisticians in Australia The BCA is a consortium of biostatistical experts from around Australia with representatives from universities, government and the pharmaceutical industry. At present there is an urgent shortage of highly skilled biostatisticians. The BCA has developed a program of postgraduate courses that aims to fill a serious gap between current programs in public health and epidemiology (which train users of biostatistical methods, not professional biostatisticians), and general statistics courses (which do not cater to the increasingly diverse and specialised needs of health research). By combining the best talents from around the country, this collaboration has developed a focused curriculum with a mission to provide Australia with well-trained professional biostatisticians. The courses provide a sound mathematically-based grounding in statistical methods with a strong emphasis on applications in all areas of health and medical research. How and where will I study?
