103. Astronomy At The University Of Maryland
The Department of astronomy has the mission of achieving excellence in research, teaching, outreach and service in the areas of astronomy and astrophysics.
http://www.astro.umd.edu/
The Department of Astronomy has the mission of achieving excellence in research, teaching, outreach and service in the areas of astronomy and astrophysics. We maintain internationally recognized theoretical, observational, and computational programs that cover the entire electromagnetic spectrum from radio waves to gamma rays and address fundamental questions on all scales from our solar system to the entire cosmos.
While we view astronomical research as the preeminent part of our mission, the other components are of great importance to us. Both our graduate and undergraduate curricula are continuously revised and updated, and our Observatory Open Houses have been enjoyed by the public for over 30 years.

Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Iceland ESO 184-G82: Supernova - Gamma Ray Burst connection. Taken fom astronomy picture of the day Icelanders have been interested in astronomy in one form or another since the settlement of the country in the ninth century. Astronomy and astrophysics at the professional level are, however, very recent addition to the Icelandic scientific scene. For example, at the University of Iceland the first course in astronomy was established in 1976. At present the scientific staff consists of three people who do their research at the Science Institute . Courses in astronomy and astrophysics are offered by the Physics Department of the Faculty of Science. Next Meeting : Thursday, May 13th, 2004, at 8:00 PM, THIS MONTH'S SPEAKER will be ATMoB member Rich Nugent. Rich will talk about some of the rarest of astronomical phenomena - "The Transits of Venus". The last one occurred on December 6, 1882. The next transit will take place on Tuesday, June 8, 2004. Since transits of Venus occur in pairs, a second will take place just 8 years later, on June 6, 2012, and then there will be no more until December 11, 2117, an interval of more than 105 years.
Rich has been an amateur astronomer since the mid-1960's, and was a member of the Aldrich Astronomical Society during his college years. He studied Chemistry, receiving an MS at Northeastern University. Rich worked for New England Nuclear Corp. for 24 years. He then decided to make a career change and become a teacher. Rich started teaching in 2001 at the Fuller Middle School in Framingham, and is currently teaching 6th grade science and math. Rich joined ATMoB around 1992, when Marion Hochuli was the president. Rich mentioned that the evening he joined, the club elected Johnny Carson as an honorary member. Rich served as the club's Observing Chairman for many years, and organized lots of star parties. He observes with a home-built 20-inch Dob

The Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Team of the National Space Science and Technology Center welcomes you to its home page. Our group includes scientists and engineers from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, Universities Space Research Association (USRA) and the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). We are actively involved in several projects which are designed to investigate the high energy regime of our Solar System and Universe. The primary objectives of our research are to study gamma-ray phenomena such as pulsars black holes other galaxies gamma-ray bursts , and other exotic astrophysical objects.

Four are visible in the image. T he Burst and Transient Source Experiment. During 9 years of successful operation, the BATSE detectors on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) continually recorded observations of gamma-ray bursts, pulsars, and other transient gamma-ray phenomena. Although the CGRO mission was terminated by NASA in June 2000, new science from BATSE and complete data archiving projects continue to occupy members of the GRA team and provide services to the high-energy astrophysics community. The Principal Investigator of this project is

Databases
The databases listed under Physics are also useful to astronomy and astrophysics. Those listed below are very specific to astronomy and astrophysics. Astrophysics Data System: Astronomy Abstract Service
The primary source of abstracts is NASA's STI, who provided abstracts from 1975 through about the middle of 1995. Since then, the majority of the abstracts are directly from the journal editors.
Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts. 1969-1998
Reference Collection 520.5 A862
Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts (AAA) aims to present a comprehensive documentation of the literature concerning all aspects of astronomy, astrophysics, and their neighbouring fields. It is devoted to the recording, summarizing, and indexing of the relevant publications throughout the world. Since 1988, most of the information given in AAA is available on-line in the data base INSPEC . An on-line version of AAA in the 'reference format', i.e. without the summaries of the papers, is available in the data base

Observational Astrophysics:
Assoc. Professor Bill Zealey, Mr Glen Moore and Mr Peter Ihnat The Department undertakes teaching and research in infrared studies of star formation, photometry and spectrometry of variable stars in the Magellanic Clouds and studies of planetary surfaces. A major part of our research involves the development and use of digitising systems in the analysis of UK Schmidt Telescope plates. We regularly observe on major Australian radio and optical telescopes accompanied by our postgraduate.
A computer-controlled 40cm telescope on the roof of the Science Building, which is equipped for photometry and electronic imaging, supports undergraduate and postgraduate research projects.
