Sprint has gone live with Ciena Corp.'s 16 WDM technology along a 200-mile route in the interexchange carrier's Midwest network, and it is also installing it in other parts of the network. Currently, networks using WDM technology are provided with four or eight times the channel capacity, but Ciena's technology allows 16 lightwave signals to be sent along the same fiber. WDM increases capacity without installing new fiber. In the case of 16 WDM, 2.5 Gb/s fiber increases to 40 Gb/s total capacity. WDM includes optical amplifiers that keep re-boosting channels along the fiber. Ciena's system can be amplified up to five times for a total of 600 kilometers maximum. The initial Midwest installation has been running for almost two months, and there have been no problems, according to Pat Nettles, chief executive officer of Ciena.

This is one of the most common diseases of apple trees as well as mountain ash, hawthorn and occasionally saskatoon and cotoneaster. Our wet summer weather is to blame. Fireblight is caused by a bacterium called Erwinia amylovora Single branches of will appear scorched as if by fire. The leaves turn brown and hag downwards. The other branches of the tree remain healthy. If the diseased branches are not cut out, fireblight will spread rapidly down to the main branches and finally the trunk of the tree. If branches are not removed the tree is often killed in one or two seasons. In time cankers appear and discharge a bacterial ooze. This is spread by insects or wet, windy weather and acts as the source of infection for other trees. The bacterium may also be carried to other trees on pollen grains. The only remedy is to remove affected limbs or remove affected plants. Between cuts dip the pruner or saw in disinfectant, and especially before using on another tree. Inspect the inner wood to ensure that no staining remains.
