A Tale of Two Paradoxes
By request, I produced a short version of this article . The short version contains just the paradoxes without the ramblings about math. It was the best of math. It was the worst of math...
Transfinite Theory
Transfinite Theory is essentially a dichotomy couched between two paradoxes. The theory starts with Bolzano's interpretation of Galileo's Paradox to assert that the set of rational numbers is the same "size" as the set of integers. It then uses the diagonal method (a form of the liar's paradox) to contend that the set of real numbers is a different "size" than the set of rationals and integers. Combined, these paradoxes create the denumerable/nondenumerable dichotomy. The denumerable/nondenumerable dichotomy exists at the mysterious transition between discrete and continuous mathematics. It is considered by many to be the basis for arithematic, logic, calculus and all higher level of mathematics. Others, such as myself, have a lesser opinion of the subject. Once you have a system based on paradoxes, you can "prove" anything you desire. By building paradox and opposition into the foundations of thought, Transfinite Theory has had a disturbing effect on the teaching of mathematics, logic and our overall society. Transfinite theory was both the source and justification for New Math. The intractible paradoxes associated with transfinite theory were one of the major reasons for yanking the study of traditional logic from school curriculums in favor of new logical methods that hold paradoxes as the central feature of thought.

I'm trying to use a library I've put together for XML serialization and it's not going so well right now. I think it still has potential but I may need to re-work it into a "version 2", because version 1 is sucking pretty badly. posted at 16:32:48, Computers in Education What is the purpose of computers in education? To cut the feedback time down. That is all they can do, and all they should do. Why? Feedback is vital for learning. Without feedback, you have nothing that most people would think of as "learning". Proper use of computers in education requires some "out-of-the-box" thinking. Proper use of computers would largely eliminate the test structures we have now, but anybody who proposes that is promptly shot as a heretic. (Have you noticed this schizophrenic approach to education reform, where we all agree that schools really need reform, but consider the way schools are doing things now holy, such that any significant reform is immediately discarded?) What if, instead of spelling tests, we required students to always use a proper spellchecker? A proper spell checker is one that dynamically underlines misspelled words immediately, instead of being run as a discrete process at the "end" of writing something. Proper spell checkers provide immediate feedback. A traditional spelling test provides feedback after a day or more, long after it is too late to learn anything from the test.

Day 11
Once again we arrived bright and early for the third week. We headed off to our first class of the week on number theory. Subjects introduced were divisibility and modular arithematic. After lunch we had an exciting game of frisbee. Then we were off to robotics to learn about the topic and a new computer program to help us program our creations, Robolab. Tuesday, July 23
Day 12
It's the third week now. Hey, guess what? After breakfast we had the same teacher as last week, Dr. McNulty, for Number Thoery. Yahoo! - time to play with numbers! For the afternoon session, we started creating our artificial environment for our robots to move around in and we also started programming the robots using Robolab. On Friday we will test our creations.

All program archives include source code and an executable for DOS/Windows. Download a program archive and unzip it into its own directory. Each archive contains an execute file that can be run by typing its name from the command line. Source and support files are usually included, as well as a README.TXT file about the program. Use any ASCII file viewer like LIST or NOTEPAD to check the README file. It will contain enough info to get you started and *some* help about the program. Some programs require additional source files and code libraries from NPF.BAS if you want to use the source code. Read About Treebeard's BASIC Vault for more info about requirements. If you manage to convert any of these DOS Basic programs to Visual Basic, please let me know!
Conditions
No conditons, no promises. Programs and source code from Treebeard's BASIC Vault are yours to use and modify as you will, but they are offered as freeware with no warranty whatsoever. Combining Multiple Graphs in Cricket
The existing documentation for visualizing multiple graphs simultaneously in Cricket is fairly limited. This document is intended to provide a more detailed tutorial.
Can and Can't
Before proceeding any further, let's first deal with what things can and cannot be done and assess the relative difficulty of each.
Multiple graphs on one page from identical target types
If you simply wish to display a single page including multiple graphs of identical target-type, it is straightforward to do.
Multiple datapoints from identical target types in a single graph
If you wish multiple targets of identical target-type to be merged into a single graph, this is also easy.
Simple math operations on identical sources in different targets of same target type
If, for example, you wish to average, sum or otherwise arithmetically manipulate identical individual sources within different targets of the same target-type, this is easy.
Pretty much anything else gets complicated. At the end I address a few techniques I have used successfully to do some of those things, but none is particularly easy. In some cases, the Cricket developers might actively discourage the techniques I employ because ongoing support might disappear.
