Personal Finance Working Your Degree November 10, 2000: 8:30 a.m. ET Applied math becomes more popular among students By Staff Writer Shelly K. Schwartz NEW YORK (CNNfn) - There are those among us for whom math just makes sense They are the followers of Pythagoras. The ones who breezed through calculus. And more likely than not, the ones who can tell you how long it takes train A to catch train B – factoring in wind velocity, speed and freight loads. They are the math majors of the world. And despite their shrinking ranks, insiders say the undergraduate degree in mathematics remains a solid springboard for career advancement especially when coupled with courses in computer science or economics.   "There are options out there," said Tom Rishel, associate director of programs and services at the Mathematical Association of America in Washington. "It's not just a question of being a teacher or actuary. There are all these other possibilities." How they fare Mathematicians, as defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, use mathematical theory, computational techniques, algorithms and the latest computer technology to solve economic, engineering, physics and business problems.

The use of optimisation technology in transportation gives significant reductions of economic and environmental costs. The picture shows map visualisation of a detailed transportation plan. The plan was produced automatically by the SPIDER optimisation software developed by the Department.
Department of Optimisation
The Department of Optimisation performs applied research and technology development based on advanced optimisation and constraint satisfaction methods. We were established as a separate department in January 1997, but our activities started in 1986. Since then, our work has concentrated on complex planning and scheduling applications within: The application of optimisation and planning technology, for instance to the areas mentioned above, may give substantial improvements to critical parameters such as customer service, resource utilisation, operational costs, and environmental impact. Currently, we are 12 employees, 10 of which are full-time research scientists. In addition, we have visiting scientists staying for shorter or longer periods.

Research: Multiscale and Stochastic Modeling in Computational Science
Develop systematic mathematical framework and computational methodologies for stochastic and multiscale modeling in science and engineering. The particular areas of application we are interested in include:
  • Fluid mechanics : complex polymeric and/or liquid crystalline flows, micro-fluidics, surface chemistry and fluid flow interaction. Solid mechanics : material defects such as phase boundaries, dislocations and cracks, crystal plasticity; interaction of microscopic mechanisms and macroscopic deformation. Chemistry : reaction rates and pathways, QM/MM modeling of macromolecules. Biology : multiscale modeling of biopolymers such as lipids, proteins and DNA, membrane deformation and dynamics.
Teaching: Graduate Curriculum in Applied Mathematics/Computational Science
This set of courses is designed for graduate students in applied mathematics whose primary interest is in the modeling and analysis of scientific problems. This is a joint project with David Cai and Eric Vanden-Eijnden of the Courant Institute. There are a total of five courses:

the Tech Prep initiative for systemic reform. Courses in applied mathematics and science are similar in content to traditional college prep courses but use workplace applications and emphasize contextual, hands-on learning. The course content is rigorous and challenging. Through relevant applications and activities, students develop a strong foundation in mathematics and science that unlocks the learning potential of those who learn abstract concepts throught concrete experiences. Description
I have written an open source textbook covering calculus, functions of a complex variable, ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations. Many of the exercises are solved in accompanying Mathematica notebooks. The textbook is freely available for download in PDF and postscript formats from:
http://www.its.caltech.edu/~sean/

By "open source" I mean that the LaTeX source as well as the XFig files and Mathematica notebooks used to make the graphics are available. This is useful for those who want to "cut and paste" portions of the text to make their own documents.

Bachelor of Science In Applied Mathematics
There are 4 emphases offered within the B.S. in Mathematics. They are all programs in what is called "Applied Mathematics". Applied mathematics includes the theoretical portions of physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, biology, economics, astronomy, sociology, linguistics and a host of other disciplines. Recent advances in computing technology have made the use of quantitative methods of even greater importance in these disciplines. The mathematical techniques used are often elementary but many others involve a sophisticated blend of mathematics and the use of advanced computing technology. Our programs are designed to provide the mathematical and statistical foundation necessary to work on a wide range of applied problems posed by these disciplines. All candidates for a degree in applied arts and sciences must complete the graduation requirements listed in the general catalog on "Graduation Requirements." All candidates for the BS degree must also pass the University Writing Examination or complete one of the approved writing courses with a grade of C (2.0) or better.

Master Of Science In Applied Mathematics
Description
Our Master of Science in Applied Mathematics is intended to prepare students for a wide range of possible careers putting mathematics to work on real-world problems. The program is designed for flexibility to allow for the many possible directions applied mathematics careers can take. The possibilities range from industrial careers, to Ph.D. programs, or teaching in the Community College System. Local industry, including biotech, the U.S. Navy, HNC, SAIC and GA have lucrative positions available for our graduates. Students should assemble a specific program of study in consultation with an adviser to make sure that all of the coursework is appropriately aimed at the student's specific career objectives. To assist with advising, the student is expected to write a short description (100-200 words) concerning his or her particular interests and expectations from the program. Based on this description, an appropriate faculty member will be consulted to help design the student's program. After the first year of study, the student should select a faculty member as an adviser for advanced study leading to a thesis. By the end of the first year the student should file an Official Program which has been approved by the graduate adviser.
