Welcome again. In order to enable prospective users to preview my text easily and conveniently, I'm putting a copy of it on the web for your perusal. The table of contents with links is at the bottom of this page. A few comments:
Many thanks to those who have helped me in this project. In particular, John Bakula for prodding me into moving this project into the final stages and pointed me in the direction of McGraw-Hill custom publishing. They are printing a nice soft copy text for a reasonable price to students about $26. The Journal of Algebra and Its Applications will publish papers both on theoretical and on applied aspects of Algebra. There is special interest in papers that point out innovative links between areas of Algebra and fields of application. As the field of Algebra continues to experience tremendous growth and diversification, we intend to provide the mathematical community with a central source for information on both the theoretical and the applied aspects of the discipline. While the journal will be primarily devoted to the publication of original research, extraordinary expository articles that encourage communication between algebraists and experts on areas of application as well as those presenting the state of the art on a given algebraic sub-discipline will be considered. DESCRIPTION
The TI-83 or TI-83 Plus calculator was designed to be very user friendly. In fact, many people who have previous experience with graphing calculators find that they can become quite proficient with the TI-83 by simply "exploring" the calculator for a day or two. The user's manual supplied with the calculator is well written, and can be used as an instruction manual or as a convenient reference in learning how to use the calculator. However, if this is your first encounter with a graphing calculator you may find the learning experience to be very frustrating! Both the calculator and the manual can be intimidating to those not familiar with this technology. The primary purpose of the tutorial is to provide instruction on the specific capabilities of the TI-83 or TI-83 Plus that are necessary for a Precalculus Algebra or College Algebra course in which the use of a graphing calculator is required. It is not meant to be exhaustive, or to cover in detail EVERY aspect of the calculator. Rather, the goal is for you to be able to use the calculator to perform the tasks which are relevant to the material covered in such a course. The content of this tutorial is text independent, but the topics have been arranged to follow the traditional sequence in a Precalculus Algebra or College Algebra text. Textbook guides are available for certain texts that align the topics in the tutorial to each section of the textbook.

The Fundamental Theorem of Algebra (FTA) states Every polynomial equation of degree n with complex coefficients has n roots in the complex numbers. In fact there are many equivalent formulations: for example that every real polynomial can be expressed as the product of real linear and real quadratic factors. Early studies of equations by al-Khwarizmi (c 800) only allowed positive real roots and the FTA was not relevant. Cardan was the first to realise that one could work with quantities more general than the real numbers. This discovery was made in the course of studying a formula which gave the roots of a cubic equation. The formula when applied to the equation x x + 4 gave an answer involving -121 yet Cardan knew that the equation had x = 4 as a solution. He was able to manipulate with his 'complex numbers' to obtain the right answer yet he in no way understood his own mathematics. Bombelli , in his Algebra , published in 1572, was to produce a proper set of rules for manipulating these 'complex numbers'. Descartes in 1637 says that one can 'imagine' for every equation of degree n n roots but these imagined roots do not correspond to any real quantity.
