$69.95 hardcover 0-8018-7822-5 (20 ctn qty) 2004 344 pp. 2 line drawings Add hardcover to shopping cart With the advent of computers that can handle symbolic manipulations, abstract algebra can now be applied. In this book David Joyner, Richard Kreminski, and Joann Turisco introduce a wide range of abstract algebra with relevant and interesting applications, from error-correcting codes to cryptography to the group theory of Rubik's cube. They cover basic topics such as the Euclidean algorithm, encryption, and permutations. Hamming codes and Reed-Solomon codes used on today's CDs are also discussed. The authors present examples as diverse as "Rotation," available on the Nokia 7160 cell phone, bell ringing, and the game of NIM. In place of the standard treatment of group theory, which emphasizes the classification of groups, the authors highlight examples and computations. Cyclic groups, the general linear group GL n ), and the symmetric groups are emphasized.

  • A carpool is a group of people who commute with each other. Therefore, a carpool is an abelian group. If 1=0 in the zero ring, why don't they call it The Ong Ring instead?
Yes, I came up with them. Posted on April 22, 2004 at 10:05 PM in Math Comments Heh heh heh. Funny thing is, I can't decide if it's good or not that I got this. :) Posted by: philroy at April 23, 2004 07:02 AM "Zero ring to rule them all, zero ring to find them..." ? Posted by: Matt Brubeck at April 23, 2004 10:29 AM Well, actually it would be "zero ring to find *it*" since the zero ring contains only one element, namely 0. Like I said, I haven't decided yet if it's good or bad that I know this stuff. Posted by: philroy at April 23, 2004 10:44 AM What, no rimshot? Geometry of the 4x4 Square Notes by Steven H. Cullinane A Structure-Endowed Entity "A guiding principle in modern mathematics is this lesson: Whenever you have to do with a structure-endowed entity S, try to determine its group of automorphisms , the group of those element-wise transformations which leave all structural relations undisturbed. You can expect to gain a deep insight into the constitution of S in this way." Hermann Weyl in Symmetry Let us apply Weyl's lesson to the following "structure-endowed entity." What is the order of the resulting group of automorphisms? First, of course, we must determine exactly what "structural relations" we wish to leave undisturbed. Trivially, the overall 4x4 structure is left undistubed by any permutation of the 16 dots. But not all sub structures are left undistubed by an arbitrary permutation. For example, the set of four rows and the set of four columns are left undisturbed by permutations of rows and/or columns, but not by permutations of the four 2x2 quadrants. We may be interested in permutations that preserve the structural relation of adjacency . In this case, it turns out that the group of symmetries of the 4-dimensional hypercube, or tesseract

There are many texts in abstract algebra: see your university bookstore. If you can tolerate a very dry presentation style, a standard reference book on abstract algebra, both comprehensive and reasonably readable, is:
    • Hungerford, Thomas A. (1974) Algebra, Springer-Verlag, New York.
If you find algebra books rough going, you might first read
    • chapter 10 of Daniel Fendel and Diane Resek (1990) Foundations of Higher Mathematics: Exploration and Proof, Addision-Wesley, Reading MA.

Dr. Paulsen has constucted a series of Mathematica notebooks that teaches abstract algebra. The core of these notebooks are the routines discussed in the publication "Group Presentations Using Mathematica" (Mathematica in Education and Reasearch Vol 4, No. 4, pp. 21-24). The textbook, "Interactive Modern Algebra," contains two volumes, "Interactive Group Theory," and "Interactive Ring Theory." Both volumes are complete, and the author is currently looking for a publisher. Mathsource's review of a VERY early version of this project.
