Transpersonal Psychology I have no doubt whatever that most people live, whether physically, intellectually or morally, in a very restricted circle of their potential being. They make use of a very small portion of their possible consciousness... much like a man who, out of his whole bodily organism, should get into a habit of using only his little finger... We all have reservoirs of life to draw upon, of which we do not dream. ~ William James Transpersonal Psychology is concerned with expanding the field of psychological inquiry, beyond the personal intra-psychic realm which previously was the domain of psychology. It is interested in holism, holistic approaches, a humanistic health model and unlimited human possibilities and " a passion for the possible.". What is Transpersonal Psychology? "Transpersonal Psychology" is a branch of psychology that is concerned with the study of those states and processes in which people experience a deeper or wider sense of who they are, or a sense of greater connectedness with others, nature, or the "spiritual" dimension. The term "transpersonal" means "beyond the personal" and a common assumption in transpersonal psychology is that transpersonal experiences involve a higher mode of consciousness in which the ordinary mental-egoic self is transcended. Transpersonal Psychology is a relatively new development in academic psychology that has yet to be recognised formally by the American Psychological Association . However, in 1997, the British Psychological Society approved the formation of an academic Transpersonal Psychology Section , as well as one for the related area of Consciousness and Experiential Psychology Among the topics currently being explored by transpersonal psychologists are:
  • Empathy Creativity and inspiration Altered states of consciousness Mind-body relationship Psychedelic experience Mystical experiences Spiritual emergencies and crises Near-death experiences, death and dying

Toward Developing Transpersonal Psychology
as a Scientific Field
Harris Friedman
Private Practice, Fort Myers, Florida
Abstract
The importance of developing the field of transpersonal psychology as a science is considered. Arguments from romanticism, scientism, and constructionism that deny the possibility of the field becoming a science are countered. A distinction is drawn between the field as a science and the broader area known as transpersonal studies which may legitimately use scientific or nonscientific methods. The concept of transpersonal phenomena is delineated from that of transcendent noumena, the latter being seen as outside of the purview of science. Scientific basics applicable to the field are discussed and a number of anti-scientific beliefs prevalent in the field are challenged. The utility of continuing to use the term transpersonal psychology as opposed to spiritual psychology is discussed and speculation is made about the field's potential for contributions toward both providing a unifying paradigm for the discipline of psychology and solving crucial problems in the world.
Reasons to Restrict the Field to Science
There are three pragmatic reasons offered as to why transpersonal psychology should be unambiguously restricted to scientific approaches. First, transpersonal psychology was clearly instituted as a field that was meant to be part of the larger discipline of scientific psychology. The major founders of transpersonal psychology were clearly invested in extending the rigorous scientific discipline of psychology beyond the conventional boundaries of psychoanalytical, behavioral, and humanistic psychology. Their purpose was not to abandon science as exemplified by the statement in the first issue of the major publication which initially launched the field, as follows: "

HUMANISTIC AND transpersonal psychology. (Part One). Humanistic transpersonal psychology 2 of 2. Lucifer, the Garden of Eden, the Tower of Babel.
http://procinwarn.com/human1.htm
HUMANISTIC AND TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY (Part One) Many of the unbiblical trends throughout society are rooted in the development of Humanistic and Transpersonal Psychology: The "Third" and "Fourth Forces". This includes trends in the evangelical church and the government school system. In the psychology establishment, the "First Force" was considered to be Psychoanalytical Psychology. The "Second Force" was Behavioral Psychology. THE THIRD FORCE
Humanistic Psychology has played a major role in obsessing this generation with "Self". It was developed by such men as Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers. Exemplified by Maslow's "Hierarchy of Needs," the goal of Humanistic Psychology is "Self Actualization" and the liberation of individuals from the bonds of society and their individual psychological condition. (Humanistic Psychology should not be confused with "Humanism", although their anti-biblical results are similar.) Carl Rogers' theory of "Self Actualization" was centered on the importance of the "Self-concept". According to Rogers the goal in life must be to achieve the "Ideal Self". Maslow said that individuals develop according to a hierarchy of needs: First the physiological needs must be satisfied (nourishment, safety, and comfort), then the psychological needs (affection and esteem), and then the need for Self-Actualization. A Self-Actualized person, according to Maslow, will exhibit spontaneity, independence, social involvement, self-acceptance, sense of humor, and a lack of hostility. He will have had what Maslow called "peak experiences", including "mystical" experiences that he calls "transient moments of Self-Actualization".
