Ingrid Sell, Ph.D.
Who are you? Self-discovery is a lifelong journey, an adventure marked by trials and triumphs. The better we know our selves, the better we are able to meet the challenges that life tosses at us, and the more we can make of the gifts we encounter along the way. Growth is not easy: growing pains can be excruciating. But do we have any other choice than to heed the call to become who we really, most authentically are? If you have ever wished that there were a roadmap for this journey, one that could point out some of the pits before you fall into them, show you where you are when you are feeling confused, and give you a perspective on where you have been and the options ahead, then you will find the benefits of an astrological reading rewarding. Astrology from a transpersonal psychological perspective is ideally suited for understanding ourselves, where we are and how we fit together with other people. It provides a valuable companion to psychotherapeutic and spiritual growth work, compatible with a wide variety of paths, including twelve-step, eastern and western spiritual practices and the creative life.

TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY
Nowadays, Transpersonal Psychology is a still young discipline. It was born from various psychological streams, critical towards Behaviourism and Psychoanalysis. From the beginning, it proposed itself as a "third force", and aimed at discovering new possibilities and potentialities of man. Its trend was "humanistic", in a way. Later on, the interest of researchers decidedly shifted to the Self: the Ego was put in second place, and space was allowed to non "personal" tendencies. In fact, man is not only a product of his story, of his milieu, and so on, but, above all, of the ring which links him to a long chain of progenitors. The man of caves continues to live inside us. But he is not only an aggressive or libidinous man, as Freud put him. He hides in himself a rich potential to enlightenment or awakening; hence, he must develop this "sparkle" of eternity through his actions. With such premises, a completely new field opens to research: there are particular experiences, whereby man can attain another state of mind, much more significant than that of his being awaken. These were already called "peak experiences" by an important exponent of humanistic psychology, that is, Abraham Maslow, and can give man a new perspective on reality and the world. In order to define the mood related to these experiences, all the greatest traditions have elaborated their specific terms: Zen speaks about satori ; Taoism about ("condition of emptiness"); Sufism about

Welcome to the home page of the MSc in Consciousness and Transpersonal Psychology by Distance Learning at Liverpool John Moores University. The areas of consciousness studies and transpersonal psychology have been developing at a rapid rate in recent years. These developments reflect an increasing popular interest in questions relating to consciousness, mind, spirituality and personal transformation. Consciousness studies and transpersonal psychology have arisen as academic disciplines within which these questions may be explored using scholarly and scientific methods, while recognising the important role that personal experience plays in developing knowledge and understanding. The School of Psychology at Liverpool John Moores University has been successfully running an attendance-mode part-time taught MSc in Consciousness and Transpersonal Psychology since 1998. This programme was itself a development from an earlier programme, the MSc in The Psychology of Human Potential, which commenced in 1994.

    TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY
    JAMES M. PRICE, MSW, MPA
    KEN WILBER
For those of you who haven't read the transpersonal philosopher Ken Wilber, I would like to introduce you to the works of a man that has had a profound influence on my work. Causal Release System Training (introduced earlier in article CRST - Introduction ) grew out of my experiences with my clients and their transcendental memories. They kept referring to traumatic events that were beyond the usual confines of time and space. Although the descriptions of these events were not clear cognitively, all of them had very clear emotional memories associated with the traumatic events. I gave these cosmic events descriptive names such as the first individuation, the second individuation, the descent into the physical, etc. because of similarities in cognitive and emotional content. But these cosmic events didn't fall into a coherent whole until I read Ken Wilber's books . For Ken Wilber describes these very same events as he has distilled them from the world's wisdom tradition. To do this introductory subject justice would require a great deal of stage setting, not the least of which would be for me to describe what I mean by the descriptive terms mentioned above. I have done that elsewhere in the book

'The central concept in Transpersonal Psychology is self-transcendence, or a sense of identity which is deeper, broader, and more unified with the whole. The root of the term, transpersonal or literally "beyond the mask," refers to this self-transcendence'
    John Davis

    History
Transpersonal Psychology grew out of the rejection of the mechanistic or behaviorist model of the mind which was the orthodoxy of the mid-twentieth century academic establishment . Charles T. Tart refers to this orthodoxy when describing his college experience in the 1960's:
'As to things like mystical experiences, if they were mentioned at all, which was rare, they were relegated to the fringes of psychiatry as being undoubtedly schizophrenic in nature and just showed how sick religions were to be associated with superstitious nonsense like that.
Real people in real life were still having transpersonal experiences of course, but they didn't speak of them around psychologists unless they wanted to be referred for treatment for psychopathology...' Gradually, the climate of opinion has changed. And the mind (as distinct from being an epiphenomenon of matter) has been rediscovered. A number of reasons for this development have been suggested:

    Transpersonal Psychology
What is Transpersonal? The word ‘transpersonal’ breaks down into two roots: ‘trans’ meaning ‘beyond or through’ and ‘personal’ which is derived from the word ‘persona’ i.e. our identity, mask or personality. The word transpersonal, thus, represents those elements of ourselves which are ‘beyond’ the identity to which we ordinarily associate ourselves. Within the context of how this specific field of psychology defines itself, and in the words of Dr. Beth Hedva: The term ‘transpersonal’ implies that these special elements which are ‘beyond’ our personality, beyond the standard identity of who and what we are, are available for us to use, to help us ‘through’ life. Waiting to be discovered in the core of who and what we are as human beings, is an expanded consciousness not outside of us but rather running ‘through’ each person. In fact, it is frequently the process of going through very human experiences, including a crisis or challenge, that we awaken to unknown strengths, and come to experience greater resources within our being.

Within that broad approach, there are different emphases. Some behaviorists argue simply that the observation of behavior is the best or most convenient way of investigating psychological and mental processes. Others believe that it is in fact the only way of investigating such process, while still others argue that behavior itself is the only appropriate subject of psychology, and that common psychological terms (belief, goals, etc.) have no referents and/or only refer to behavior. Those taking this point of view sometimes refer to their field of study as

They make use of a very small portion of their possible consciousness...much like a man who, out of his whole bodily organism, should get into a habit of using only his little finger...We all have reservoirs of life to draw upon, of which we do not dream.
