TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY Transpersonal psychology started off within humanistic psychology, and then became more distinct, with its own separate journals and conferences. So here we have something which goes beyond the borders of humanistic psychology. Yet if we look at a map of the transpersonal, such as the one given to us by Ken Wilber (see Figure 1), we can see that it overlaps with the humanistic. So there is still a strong connection, such that for example Frances Vaughan, a star of the Association for Transpersonal Psychology, could be elected President of the Association for Humanistic Psychology. Transpersonal experiences involve an expansion or extension of consciousness beyond the usual ego boundaries and beyond the limitations of time and space. Maslow talked about peak experiences, and these form a good entrance point for understanding the transpersonal. It is very important, however, not to fall into the one-two-three-infinity theory of the transpersonal, where we say that one is the body, two is the emotions, three is the intellect, and everything beyond that is one great mish- mash called "the transpersonal". As the chart demonstrates, there is more than one realm within the transpersonal, and these distinctions are quite essential if we are not to misunderstand our own experience. Progression from one level to the next is not easy, because it is, as Wilber has emphasised, a dialectical process involving the negating of the previous phase. Many of us have had the experience of seeing the mental ego, with all its rules and roles, as quite ugly and wrong, when we first came into the stage of authenticity. And just in a similar way, we have to renounce the sense of a separate self with clear boundaries when we move on to the stage of the Subtle self or soul. This is a rich realm, full of symbols and myths, archetypes and visions, multiplicity and imagination. This is where we get in touch with the higher self, the deeper self, the transpersonal self, as Assagioli called it.

Transpersonal - a gateway
From our own experience and the case histories of many people, we share personal insights and understandings of Transpersonal Psychology, Psychotherapy and Spirituality. The Transpersonal Notebooks explore Transpersonal as a Definition of Humanity and Transpersonal Spirituality from the root meaning of both the words used and the Philosophies they embrace. The Transpersonal Essence can become clouded by the semantics of communication through words for a personality caught up in preconceptions (or "is"-ness) of religious language and doctrinal meaning. In this site, a common sense approach to the Transpersonal Paradigm uses Plain English to make the discussion accessible to all, hopefully minimizing reactions from shadow personalities.
Transpersonal Psychology and Psychotherapy
  • Transpersonal as a paradigm, is potentially the most complete expression of Psychology, Psychotherapy and Counseling, embracing the ideal and the actual, the theoretical and the practical .. even though not yet Universally recognized or accepted.

Transpersonal
reality beyond the illusion of personality There are (from my perspective and position) two different schools - one is Transpersonal Psychology and the other is the Psychology of the Transpersonal Experience.
Transpersonal Psychology ..
In Transpersonal Psychology, one looks from a theoretical perspective - the cognitive process of moving beyond the personality into the Transpersonal self as a sort of mystical spirituality. This provides hope for those struggling in the pre-personal, personal or material life experience for a sense of Self Love or Spirituality.
The sideways shift from this is the Psychology (or mind understanding) of that state of consciousness known as Transpersonal.
I draw the distinction here because the cognitive perspective tends to view and discuss "levels" or dimensions of consciousness and set them as targets .. often theoretically understandable through the comparison of one with the other.
But, what happens when this learned explanation and, the whole level structure of concept of separation drops away and one collapses into or falls into a space where there are no levels of distinction; Psychology has no foundation and Spirituality has no roots.
The Transpersonal Self CANNOT be sought with the mind - and once one "falls into it", the mind senses "madness" because it loses control.

Transpersonal psychology
Transpersonal psychology is a school of Psychology , considered by many the '4th force' in the field: according to its adherents and proponents, the traditional division of psychology schools: behaviorism psychoanalysis and humanistic psychology had failed to include those psychology schools that focus on the transegoic dimension of human existence, dealing with phenomena of religious conversion, altered states of consciousness and spiritual life. However this analysis is controversial: most psychologists would not consider that behaviorism, psychoanalysis and humanistic psychology exhausted the range of current psychological approaches, and in fact none of them are particularly influential in current psychology. Furthermore, the phenomena listed are considered by standard subdisciplines of psychology, religious conversion falling within the ambit of social psychology , altered states of consciousness within physiological psychology, and spiritual life within the psychology of religion. Transpersonal psychologists, however, disagree with the approach to such phenomena taken by other schools of psychology, and claim that have typically been dismissed either as signs of various kinds of mental illnesses or regression to infantile stages of psychosomatic development.

understands it. I see it as development across all
levels of consciousness with an emphasis on those
particular things that awaken our soul
a human being unique; however, it does include the
altered states such as dreams, meditation, hypnosis,
sexual arousal and even feelings of euphoria experienced

egoic prison it might be housed in. We stand on a very short bridge called the present. As the people who stand
on this bridge at this particular time in history, we must
make the best decisions to move most effectively from the past to the future The clearest way is transpersonally, even though sometimes one might think this is very dense stuff !

The last few decades have seen the emergence of a growing body of literature devoted to a critique of the so-called “old” or “Cartesian-Newtonian” paradigm which, in the wake of the prodigious successes of modern natural science, came to dominate the full range of authoritative intellectual discourse and its associated worldviews. Often coupled with a materialistic, and indeed atomistic, metaphysics, this paradigm has been guided by the methodological principle of reductionism . The critics of reductionism have tended to promote various forms of holism , a term which, perhaps more than any other, has served as the rallying cry for those who see themselves as creators of a “new paradigm.” More recently, the notion of complexity has been taken up by the more scientifically informed representatives of the new paradigm, without, however, sufficient awareness of the fact that what excites the scientists is the possibility of explaining, modeling—in short, of reducing—the phenomenon of complexity to fundamentally simple, essentially atomistic, operational counters. The situation is quite otherwise, however, in the work of renowned French thinker Edgar Morin, whose professional life has been devoted to elucidating the irreducible character of genuine complexity. Because his work has yet to reach a wide American audience

Allan Turner's Person Centred Web Site CARL ROGERS AND TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY John Keith Wood Estância Jatobá 13820 Jaguariúna, Brazil Our wine existed before what you call the grape and the vine. Ibn el-Farid ABSTRACT: The claims that Carl Rogers was what is presently understood as a "transpersonal psychologist" or that he had converted to a "transpersonal movement" by virtue of various late-in-life experiences are shown to be unwarranted. To understand his complex relationship with these subjects, it is noted that Rogers did not conform with much of the behavior with which they are associated. Nevertheless, he did have, from the beginning of his work in client-centered therapy, experiences which must be considered congenial with the essence of the "transpersonal." The purpose of this article is to recognize the distinction between outward appearance and one's legitimate inner experience and to encourage a deeper exploration of this difference. A small, but prolific, academic industry has built up on the basis of comparing the North American psychologist Carl R. Rogers with other famous figures. Researchers have linked Rogers's ideas with those of the psychoanalysts Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and Heinz Kohut; the psychiatrist Milton Erickson; the anthropologist Gregory Bateson; the communitarian H.C. Boyte; the pedagogue Paulo Freire; the philosopher Martin Buber; and the politician Franklin Roosevelt.

I couldn't find validation for some of my experiences through the disease lens of addiction: I was in need of a philosophy large enough to explain the newly expanding me. And I found this broader context and support in the field of transpersonal psychology, a field that incorporates both Western and Eastern thought and spiritual traditions from throughout the world. I brought with me my knowledge of addiction, and when I eventually returned to the field of addiction, I brought back the concepts and perspective I had gained while studying(and living!)transpersonal psychology. This new-paradigm psychology focuses on the inner life and the psycho-spiritual realities that reside deep within us: the mystical life. The transpersonal definition of the self includes both the ego and the soul or spirit. It sees as legitimate both the ancient spiritual healing traditions and more contemporary psychological methods.
