Welcome to ATP. On these pages you will find resources and information that will help you to understand Transpersonal Psychology and the transpersonal perspective. We hope to make this site an valuable resource for scholars, practitioners, and the public. It will be updated regularly, so stop back often. Transpersonal Psychology is a relatively new field of study. It combines insights from modern psychology with those drawn from traditional spiritual practices, both Eastern and Western. The antecedents of Transpersonal Psychology can be found in Eastern spiritual traditions, such as Buddhist, Sufi, Taoist, and Vedanta traditions; in spiritual practices of the monks and saints from the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox religions; in the American Transcendentalist movement, represented by Emerson, Thoreau, and the religious democracy of the Quakers and other early American Protestant denominations; and in the pioneers of modern cross-cultural psychology and psychology of religion, Carl Jung and William James. Transpersonal Psychology was formally founded as a distinct perspective in psychology by Abraham Maslow and Anthony Sutich in 1969 with the publication of the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology.

Transpersonal Psychology
Transpersonal Psychology is the extension of psychological studies into consciousness studies, spiritual inquiry, body-mind relationships and transformation. Carl Jung first coined the term transpersonal (uberpersonlich) when he used the phrase "transpersonal unconscious" as a synonym for "collective unconscious." A key stimulus for the establishment of transpersonal psychology as a distinct field of inquiry was Abraham H. Maslow's research on self-actualizing persons. Maslow's work addressed not only psychological wounding and personal development, but the study of peak experiences, inspired creativity, altruistic ideals and personal actions that transcend "ordinary" personality as well. Refined by the work of scholars such as Roger Walsh, Frances Vaughan, Stanislav Grof, Arthur J. Deikman, Ken Wilber and Charles T. Tart, transpersonal psychology now encompasses the study of the full range of human experience, from abnormal behavior to healthy normal functioning, to spiritually embodied and transcendent consciousness. The following compilation by Robert Hutchins, Ph.D., offers ten simple ways to explain transpersonal psychology:

The Journal of Transpersonal Psychology: An Orientation
As a major orientation in psychology, a transpersonal perspective connects contemporary educational, scientific, and clinical methods with personal, social, and spiritual understanding. It is concerned with full human awareness, the integration of psychological and spiritual experience, and the transcendence of self. Since its founding the Journal has published sixty issues, including over three hundred articles by more than three hundred fifty authors.
Historical Note
Transpersonal psychology was first announced and defined with the publication of The Journal of Transpersonal Psychology , in 1969. Guided by the work of psychologists Abraham Maslow, Anthony Sutich and colleagues, this new field was founded on a commitment to open-ended inquiry, experiential and empirical validation, and a values-oriented approach to human experience. In 1972 the Association for Transpersonal Psychology was established to encourage individual and group learning, cooperation among disciplines, research in theory and application, and the dissemination of information about the field.

http://www.whole-person-counseling.com/Transpersonal.htm
TRANSPERSONAL COUNSELING in Portland, Oregon What is Transpersonal Psychology? Transpersonal psychology originated in 1969 when psychologist Abraham Maslow and colleagues concluded that the field of humanistic psychology, which they helped to originate, was itself still too limited in its scope of study of human experience. The transcendent, the 'ultimate', the transpersonal aspect of human nature still was excluded from Western scientific study. The field of transpersonal psychology originated to remedy this. In the words of Anthony Sutich (1969), founding editor of The Journal of Transpersonal Psychology: Transpersonal Psychology is the title given to an emerging force in the psychology field by a group... who are interested in those ultimate human capacities and potentialities that have no systematic place in... behavioristic theory (“first force”), classical psychoanalytic theory (“second force”), or Humanistic psychology (“third force”).... T ranspersonal therapy is also concerned with the psychological processes related to the realization, or making real, of states such as "illumination," "mystical union," "transcendence," and "cosmic unity." It is also concerned with the psychological conditions or psychodynamic processes which directly or indirectly form barriers to these transpersonal realizations.

What is it we want? To fully experience our aliveness. To feel in our bodies a streaming, like the rush of the river over stones. To be awake alert and responsive in our limbs, and sensitive in our fingertips. To feel as if our inner and outer reality is congruent and that our efforts are rewarded by a sense of satisfaction. We aspire to have our private lives nestle within the valley of a public world, which we can affirm. We long to feel connected to each other. We want to be able to embrace and be embraced. We want to live the lives of our bodies to permit us to fully live our lives, Chinese medicine is a beginning." - Ballantine - A New Realm Media Production

The client is well-dressed and articulate but strangely disheveled. It is clear he has been under lots of stress recently. He seems calm but sits on the edge of his chair like a man on a mission. The psychologist listens attentively as she does her intake evaluation. "So you have been seeing and hearing some things you are not sure about?" she asks.
