Current research
Signs of Pretense
For the past few years, we have been deciphering what features distinguish pretend acts from real ones. There must be some features of pretense that babies can pick up on, that make it so babies do not mistakenly confuse pretense acts as a new kind of real act. Something in pretense must serve to signal babies, "interpret this as a different kind of act." We are investigating a wide array of potential cues, and eliciting a wealth of interesting data. These concern how the voice changes in pretense (using the Computer Speech Lab), how the content of speech changes, how one moves differently in pretense (using the Flock of Birds motion monitor), facial expressions in pretense and whether there is a special type of smile, social referencing in pretense, and so on. We are also examining which of the behavioral changes we see are useful to adults and children in judging whether an act is pretense, and how well babies seem to understand pretense.

147. Y2K Bibliography Of Experimental Economics And Social Science
A bibliography containing about 2500 citations, with keywords and selected abstracts, for papers in economics and other social sciences that use laboratory experiments to study human behavior (political science, psychology, law, finance, and accounting).

The Bibliography of Experimental Economics and Social Science Charles A. Holt This bibliography lists exactly publications, plus about 500 discussion papers in experimental economics and social science (updated December 29, 1999). It is arranged by keyword topic, roughly following the layout of Davis and Holt's Experimental Economics (1993). Each citation appears in only one primary category on the left, and may appear in multiple sub-topic listings. Asterisks indicate data that I have a question about, and selected abstracts represent my personal interpretations, which are not necessarily those of the author(s). I hope that you find it useful, and corrections and suggestions are welcome: holt@virginia.edu Charles Holt ). The on-line search product provided by the Endnote program used to compile this bibliography has been discontinued, and I am working on an alternative. Methodology

Psychology Department Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. It is an empirically based discipline which has developed its own distinctive research methods and techniques as well as drawing upon those from a variety of related areas. The Psychology Department offers a range of options at undergraduate level, all within the University's modular programme. All courses offer training in empirical methods and research design as well as a range of transferable skills. Students are allowed considerable choice over the content of their programmes. English Español THE WALDEN COMMUNITY Community Description Beyond Walden Two Links Community Description This community's reason to be is personal, interpersonal and cultural development, resulting in the building of an essentially new culture, characterized by a permanent search for the Good, for Truth and Beauty. Thus, we face social and ecological problems from a perspective of primary prevention, which really allows to get out of doing patchwork. Four basic pillars of the above mentioned development that we intentionally choose and for which we find a symbol in the name "Walden Community" are:
  • personal change, indispensable for meaningful social change; a model of society based on equality, cooperation and genuine friendship, within small, self-manageable communities; ecology as a basic criterion for all our behaviors; the application, to every aspect of life, of scientific psychology, with an integrative, yet neither mentalistic nor spiritualistic approach (see Beyond Walden Two
  • The Walden Community was founded in Spain in 1996. We are five members (three adults and two children). We practice a preventive concept of health. According to it, as well as to vital ecological reasons, we choose vegan nutrition (pure vegetarian, free of animal products, see Links: Veganism ) and natural medicine. Members self-determine their behavior by their own commitment with the principles they build every day (as personal as well as community's principles), not by following a code of rules. We have a non-political, non-religious, non-dogmatic approach; we promote not speeches but reflection and debate, not indoctrination but personal development.

Aging and depression don't go hand in hand
: "Of the approximately 35 million U.S. residents older than 65, an estimated 2million suffer from a depressive illness. Another 5million show significant depressive symptoms, although they may not meet the criteria for an official diagnosis. " - posted at 4:55 PM Sunday, May 16, 2004 HoustonChronicle.com - Depression research finds mental health experts optimistic : "These new approaches go far beyond current treatments, most of which work by increasing levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Over the past decade, researchers have linked depression to other neurochemicals and have found evidence that structural defects in the brain might play a role." - posted at 3:32 PM Tuesday, May 04, 2004
