Resources for Teaching Perception
A wealth of material is available for teaching sensation and perception sometimes in the unlikeliest of places. You should acquire the habit of scanning predictable places, including journals such as Behavior Research Methods, Instruments, and Computers Scientific American , and Teaching of Psychology . You will often find articles in these journals that describe clever demonstrations or teaching strategies. But keep your eyes (and ears) open. We've found great demonstrations in advertisements (e.g., the Batman logo provides a wonderful figure-ground illusion can you see an open mouth with rounded teeth?), television programs, puzzle books, etc. For example, the Edmund Scientific catalog displays a wealth of optics products that can be used for demonstrations. Several relevant and interesting programs have appeared on PBS over the past few years. Some of these are available from PBS in videocassette, and we have listed them below. We have arranged the resources according to the relevant chapter from the text. However, keep in mind that many of the resources are useful in making points about topics in several chapters particularly some of the computer programs.
If you come across a particularly good resource that we don't mention here, or if you simply want to pass along some information about the textbook, please contact

    Overview
How do we transform information from the environment into perceptions of the real world, including patterns, colours, movements, sounds, textures, and pains? We try to answer this question by considering physiological, psychophysical, anatomical, clinical, developmental, and philosophical studies of the senses.

We'll spend a lot of time talking about hearing and vision, not only because they are the most important and vital of the senses, but because there has been much more research in those areas. We will examine these senses from both an experimental and a physiological point of view. Lecture Class periods will be spent not only lecturing about the most important aspects of each chapter in the book, but hopefully giving you some ideas about current work going on in the field, especially in vision, as well as a number of demonstrations to illustrate points made in class and in the book.
