Sensation refers to the process of sensing our environment through touch, taste, sight, sound, and smell. This information is sent to our brains in raw form where perception comes into play. Perception is the way we interpret these sensations and therefore make sense of everything around us.

INTRODUCTORY PSYCHOLOGY When we smell a fragrant flower, are we experiencing a sensation or a perception? In everyday language, the terms "sensation" and "perception' are often used interchangeably. However, as you will soon see, they are very distinct, yet complementary processes. In this section, we will discuss some concepts central to the study of sensation and perception and then move on to discuss vision and the perception of pain (it is not possible in the scope of these notes to discuss all the senses). I. Sensations and Perceptions Sensations can be defined as the passive process of bringing information from the outside world into the body and to the brain. The process is passive in the sense that we do not have to be consciously engaging in a "sensing" process. Perception can be defined as the active process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting the information brought to the brain by the senses. A) HOW THEY WORK TOGETHER: 1) Sensation occurs: a) sensory organs absorb energy from a physical stimulus in the environment. b) sensory receptors convert this energy into neural impulses and send them to the brain.

Sensation tells us there are objects in the world outside ourselves; perception tells us what and where they are and what they are doing. Together, our sensations and perceptions link our brains to the world and allow us to form mental representations of reality. We know the world through many senses, including seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, and tasting. With more than 50 percent of our cerebral cortex devoted to visual functions and much of the remainder devoted to audition (including speech), seeing and hearing are by far the most studied. The visual sense is amazing because we can create vivid, detailed representations of the world from rather fuzzy patches of light momentarily projected through the lens of the eye onto the retina. From this highly impoverished two-dimensional array of light and dark, we construct a complex three-dimensional mental model of the world around us. This model identifies people and objects of specified shapes, sizes, and colors, located at specific places or moving across our field of view. The processes underlying this everyday miracle are still somewhat mysterious, but behavioral scientists specializing in sensation and perception are discovering the steps that transform retinal nerve firings into the internal cinema of daily life.

The ultimate goal of perception is to obtain reliable and useful knowledge of the objects and events in the world that surround us. We will cover such topics as the physical structure of the various sensory systems (i.e., their anatomy and physiology), the mechanisms by which simple sensory features (such as color, depth, and motion in vision or location and pitch in audition) are encoded, how people choose to attend to some things and ignore others, and the perception of taste and touch. There will be an emphasis on vision and audition. To aid in your understanding of sensation and perception, I encourage you to carry out the demonstrations in the text, as learning through experience can be a powerful way to synthesize your understanding of the many important topics. I also often refer to figures and tables in the text to provide further comprehension. I also encourage you to take on this topic with wide-open enthusiasm because as you complete this course, you will discover the incredible mysteries of the human perceptual machine. It is this discovery that enriches my teaching and my continued pursuit of knowledge. Course Materials >> Return to top of page

    Question
What is the difference between sensation and perception and what are some examples? I`ve searched the web and found some sites, but can`t understand what they are talking about. I would like to know in plain English.
Answer Juanita, Distinguishing sensation and perception can be an arbitrary task. It essentially involves creating artificial boundaries, then deciding that sensation is one thing and perception is another thing. My distinctions will probably be different from those of others, and arguably there isn't a "right" answer anyway. That being said, here's a general overview of one way of distinguishing the two. In order to interact with the world, we have to represent stuff in our brains. The stuff in the world enters through our sensory organs (eyes, ears, nose, skin). The actual physical impression of the thing on our sense organs can be thought of as sensation. So, the retinal activation associated with seeing something, the physical impression that an object we are feeling makes on our skin, the vibrations of the ear drum, etc. can all be thought of as being a part of sensation.
