Our Age Of Psychology Some years ago I wrote a work, The Evolution of Mind, in which I used almost the entire teaching of four or five branches of science to throw light on one single issue: whether mind is a function of the nervous system and how, as such, it came into being. I then held the eccentric opinion that the first object of any science was to tell us the nature of the reality or realities it studied; that the first question which thoughtful people would put to a science of mind is, in view of the world-wide interest in the subject, whether the mind is a spiritual intruder in a material universe or merely a function of the steadily developing nervous system. And the only men who failed to appreciate my work were the psychologists. "That," said a St. Louis professor, fraternally but firmly, to me, "is not psychology." The evolution of psychology is a proof that science has not yet completely emancipated itself from its serfdom to religious beliefs. It was originally a branch of philosophy, and its chief purpose was to serve religion by furnishing convincing proofs that the soul is spiritual and immortal. In proportion as the methods of science were adopted in it, and arguments of a philosophical character were eliminated, the aim of the science was changed. Half a century ago it abandoned the word "soul," and it threw out the question of immortality as a minor irrelevance to be wrangled over by Materialists, Christians, Spiritualists, and Theosophists.

PSYCHOLOGY OF RELIGION
Dr. LaFrance Course Description This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to examine several schools of psychology as they attempt to interpret and/or integrate a variety of religious experiences. The course will examine schools of psychology which reflect the Psychoanalytic, Behavio ral, Humanistic and Transpersonal traditions. Methodologies used by these various schools of psychology to study the variety of religious experiences will also be examined. This course provides a broad overview for understanding some of the psychological aspects of the various religious experiences. Much of this over view is organized around a developmental approach to psychological and spiritual growth. Authors who contribute to an understanding of this developmental approach will be examined. Although the course will provide a good academic base for understanding, it is also designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply this material toward a deeper understanding of their own religious experiences. Since there are so many different ways to view or understand the nature of various religious experiences, students will be encouraged to articulate their own understanding of religious experiences.

Psychology/Religion Major
The Psychology/Religion Major seeks to focus attention upon both God and man, recognizing their relationship and the commonality that is shared in the study of both psychology and religion. This program is specially developed for the student who wants the strengths of both psychology and religion in his training. These two areas are brought together and merged in a strong, unique field of study. People planning for the pastorate, youth or Christian education work, and other types of Christian ministry will find the psychology-religion major valuable.

128. Psychology Of Religion: A Short Introduction
psychology of religion A Short Introduction. (Paloutzian) ‘Whether or not one holds personal religious beliefs, one can study the psychology religion.
http://www.oneworld-publications.com/books/texts/the-psychology-of-religion-ch1.
Psychology of Religion: A Short Introduction Psychology and Religion WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY? What is psychology? I believe that it involves observing people, recording those observations and trying to interpret what has been observed and recorded. The Hutchinson’s Encyclopedia supports this belief. It says that psychology is the ‘systematic study of human ... behaviour’, and that psychology includes the study of ‘the roles of instinct ... culture ... and the functioning of thought, intelligence and language’ (Hutchinson, 1994). My dictionary of psychology dwells on its task of definition for several pages, but it starts confidently enough. It says that psychology is the ‘branch of science dealing with behaviour, acts or mental processes, and with the mind, self or person who behaves or acts or has the mental processes’ (English and English, 1958). How, then, can we define the psychology of religion? Argyle and Beit-Hallahmi begin their classic textbook (in 1958 it was called Religious Behaviour, by Argyle alone, in 1975, The Social Psychology of Religion, and in 1997 the title was The Psychology of Religious Behaviour, Belief and Experience, with Beit-Hallahmi as first author) with the terse promise that they will ‘present the main empirical findings from social surveys, field studies and experiments about religious behaviour, beliefs and experience’ (Argyle and Beit-Hallahmi, 1975) All of this would allow me to maintain that psychology is the study of behaviour, thought and feeling, and that the psychology of religion is the study of religious behaviour, thought and feeling. But in the late 1990s, am I allowed to be so simplistic?

Invited article for the Reformed Review, 2000, 53(2), 95-102 IS PRAYER CLINICALLY EFFECTIVE?* David G. Myers * The last part of this essay is adapted from David G.Myers and Malcolm A. Jeeves, Psychology through the Eyes of Faith (HarperCollins, 1997). The illusory correlation box is adapted from David G. Myers, Psychology , 6th edition (Worth Publishers, 2001). Anecdote and research on prayer’s clinical effectiveness has become big news of late. A 1997 Christianity Today cover story (preceding a Newsweek prayer cover story) explains “how physicians and scientists are discovering the healing power of prayer.” Although the magazine acknowledges that “petitionary prayer is not 100 percent effective” (imagine if it were), it welcomes the conclusion of Georgetown University internist and prayer researcher Dale Matthews: “Prayer is good for you. The medical effects of faith on health are not a matter of faith, but of science.” Is prayer good for you? No one argues that prayer by those who believe in prayer’s healing power might indeed calm the soul, relieve stress, and lead to reduced hypertension, controlled headaches, and strengthened immune functioning. But a sugar pill, offered as if it were a real therapy, can do as much. Such is the power of positive belief (a fact of life that guarantees some successes for the devotees of alternative medicine gurus such as Deepak Chopra and Andrew Weil, regardless of whether their specific recommendations have any intrinsic healing power).

Description:
Paperback, 454 pages. Contributors: Gordon W. Allport, Paul F. Barkman, Glen D. Baskett, Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi, Peter L. Benson, David C. Bock, Donn Byrne, Donald E. Capps, Walter Houston Clark, John A. Clippinger, James E. Dittes, William G. T. Douglas, David Elkind, Craig W. Ellison, Robert A. Embree, Kenneth A. Feldman, David A. Flakoll, Richard L. Sanua, James R. Scroggs, Charles M. Spellman, Bernard P. Spilka, John A. Stoudenmire, Orlo Strunk, Jr., and Neil C. Warren. Excerpt(s): A few years ago an inconspicuous member of one of my classes sought me out. The mother of a family, she told me about a religious experience of a mystical nature, a story she had confided to no other living person. Not understanding it, except in its general nature, I listened sympathetically but gave no advice. But the incident seemed to set in motion a psychological and religious process of surprising proportions. Shortly afterward she became active in her church. Now others seek her out to take leadership in discussion groups, and, to her embarrassment, church members refer problems to her that, more appropriately, should go to the pastor. Besides being much more forceful, she is more attractive, and she herself is amazed to find that she is becoming a positive force for good in the community and in her family instead of just another aging housewife.
