Disability Services Documentation Requirements and Guidelines Psychiatric/Psychological Disorders In order for students at Montana State University-Great Falls College of Technology to receive disability-related support services on campus, current documentation of disability must be on file with the Disability Services Coordinator. Documentation for psychiatric/psychological disorders (including, but not limited to depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorders and dissociative disorders) must be provided by an impartial licensed mental health professional. In order to assist Disability Services in collaborating with students to determine appropriate accommodations, we recommend that documentation include the following:
  • A clear statement of the disability, including the DSM-IV diagnosis and a summary of present symptoms. A statement of the current impact the psychiatric/psychological condition has on the student's functioning. A summary of assessment procedures and evaluation instruments used to make the diagnosis, including evaluation results and standardized scores if applicable. Medical information relating to the student's needs, including the impact of medication on the student's ability to meet the demands of the postsecondary environment.

Psychological disorders as consequences of involvement in motor vehicle accidents: a discussion and recommendations for a research program
Author: W.A. Harrison
The potential consequences of crash involvement in the Psychological domain are discussed, based on the small corpus of relevant literature and additional material concerning psychological disorders thought to occur as a result of exposure to traumatic events. The results of an analysis of Victorian crash data suggest that the lifetime risk of developing psychological disorders resulting from injury in a crash is quite high. For post traumatic stress disorder, for example, this risk is estimated at 13.1%. It is concluded that there is a need to conduct research in this area to investigate the psychological consequences of crash involvement in the Australian context and to develop and evaluate therapeutic interventions which might reduce the impact of crash involvement.
Executive Summary
This report is the result of concerns about the lack of interest in the likelihood that the psychological consequences of crash involvement may have a significant long-term impact on crash victims. 'Re possibility that there may be substantial social and medical/paramedical costs associated with psychological trauma has not been investigated in the Australian context, and there is relatively little research in this area in the international road-safety literature. This report presents a general overview of the involvement of psychological processes in the crash event and recovery, and then focuses on the likely development of psychological disorders as a result of crash involvement. Four specific disorders are discussed, and using information drawn from the literature, crash data from Victoria, and the 1996 population census, estimates of the lifetime risk of developing each disorder as a result of injury in a crash were calculated. These are:

Seminars, Educational Presentations, Workshops
Based on my extensive and research oriented knowledge of the literature, and on my 10 years of practical experience with trauma victims, I am able to provide a variety of consultation services to organizations or individuals. Sample Topics:
  • Constant exposure to traumatic incidents of emergency workers and its relationship to job dissatisfaction, work absenteeism, permanent disability and requests for early retirement Comorbidity of PTSD and substance use disorders: effect of alcohol on cognitive and physiological (arousal) symptoms of PTSD Sequels of an accident: how cognitive, behavioural and physiological symptoms of chronic pain contribute to the exacerbation and maintenance of post traumatic stress symptoms Development of PTSD in individuals who are repeatedly exposed to situations in which they witness the sufferings of others Heightened risk of PTSD development in individuals who had been abused during childhood or adolescence. This is of special relevance for people employed in high-risk occupations (eg. military personal, police officers), or in cases where such a "survivor" is being exposed to traumatic incidents of living (eg. car accident, workplace harassment).
