In this page, we are trying to help adults to identify children and who are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). We will first define what are post-traumatic stress disorders. We will then describe the symptoms, which may help parents, teachers, and fieldworkers to identify children with post-traumatic stress disorders. We will also share some "trauma help sheets" with you. Lastly, we are developing a help line to respond to your questions.
    What are post-traumatic stress disorders?
For years, post-traumatic stress disorders were believed to occur among adults who are traumatized by wars or disasters. Recent studies, however, have shown that children are likely to develop post-traumatic stress disorders because of an increasing exposure to armed conflicts and violence in society. According to Duane Brown in "Counseling the Victims of Violence who Develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder," children and adolescents who are exposed to violence by hearing about violent acts, witnessing violence or being victims of violence themselves. The majority of psychological disorders are treated using a combination of medication, therapy, and support. Because of the social stigma that often accompanies these conditions, students may be reluctant to disclose their needs for accommodations. Some of the causes of these disorders are trauma, biochemical imbalances, highly stressful life experiences and other genetic, biological and social factors. While it likely takes a combination of several of these factors to produce a serious psychological disability, researchers are working to discover specific causes of these conditions. The psychological disorders most commonly experienced by students at Southern include:
    • Anxiety Attention Deficit Disorders Depressive Disorders Eating Disorders Panic Disorders Personality Disorders Post Traumatic Stress Disorders Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders Schizophrenia Substance Abuse
    General Considerations

Depression / Bipolar Disorder / Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Depression is one of the most common and most serious mental health problems facing people today. This year, more than 19 million American adults (9.5% of the population) will suffer from this disorder. Major depression is manifested by a combination of symptoms that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy once pleasurable activities.
While the severity and number of symptoms vary from person to person, they can include the following: a persistent sad mood; loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed; significant change in appetite or body weight; difficulty sleeping or oversleeping; physical slowing or agitation; loss of energy; feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt; difficulty thinking or concentrating; and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.

A new study found that people with a particular variation in the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTT) showed a greater fear response during a laboratory experiment. "While a single gene cannot be held accountable for complex emotional states - such as anxiety disorders - we're beginning to pinpoint which genetic traits may make a person susceptible to developing psychological disorders," said Norman Schmidt, a study co-author and an associate professor of psychology at Ohio State University.
