Psychological Disorders
Psychological disorders cover a wide range of disorders such a neuroses, psychoses, and personality disorders. The majority of psychological disorders are controlled using a combination of medications and psychotherapy. If the student self-discloses to the instructor, it may be appropriate to discuss problems and side effects associated with medications. Only a limited number of court cases have been conducted to set precedents for reasonable accomodations for students with any of these disorders. Based on court rulings on other types of disabilities it is probably that some of the following accomodations may be considered appropriate and reasonable.
Accommodations may include:
  • extended time for exams, quiet testing area with a proctor
  • notetakers, readers, or tape recorders in class
  • seating arrangements that enhance the learning experience of the student
  • incompletes or late withdrawals in place of course failures in the event of prolonged illness
  • assistance with time management and study skills
  • encouragement to use relaxation and stress reducing techniques during exams
  • flexibility in the attendance requirements in case of health-related absences.

http://www.training4today.com/bpt/r/m5/p28.htm
Guidelines for Reasonable Accommodations and Disabilities (GRAD) Introduction ADA Compliance Unit Armstrong Injunction Requirements BPT Legal Authority ... Conclusion MENTAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS AND REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS: The ADA defines “mental impairment” as any mental or psychological disorder, such as emotional or mental illness, which includes:
  • manic depression, major depression, bipolar disorder, most anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and personality disorders found in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV).
Mental illness is not the same as mental retardation. The two are distinct disorders. A diagnosis of mental retardation is chiefly characterized by limitations in intellectual functioning, as well as difficulties with certain skills of daily life. By definition, mental retardation begins before the age of 18. In effective communication, approach each inmate/parolee with an open mind and about his/her strengths and abilities. Effective communication may be achieved by using basic communication skills in a patient, respectful, dignified manner, avoiding big words or complicated concepts.

Psychiatric/Psychological Disorders
Students with psychiatric disabilities have experienced significant emotional issues that generally have chronic symptoms and have been treated professionally. With appropriate treatment, often combining medications, psychotherapy, and support, the majority of psychiatric disorders can be controlled. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that one in five people in the United States have some form of psychiatric disability, but only one in five persons with a diagnosable psychiatric disorder ever seeks treatment due to the strong stigmatization involved. Below are brief descriptions of some common psychiatric disabilities Depression is a major disorder that can begin at any age. Major depression may be characterized by a depressed mood most of each day, a lack of pleasure in most activities, thoughts of suicide, sleep problems, and feelings of worthlessness or guilt.
