Psychological Disorders Associated with Serial Killers Psychological Disorders are illnesses that affect millions of people worldwide. They can range from Clinical Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, to Schizophrenia and Tourettes's Disorder. The American Psychiatric Association has published five editions of what is called the Diagnostical and Statistical Manual. This specific manual defines all recognized disorders; and their symptoms, diagnostic criteria, and associated demographic information. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder- The essential feature of this disorder is a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity impulsivity that is more frequent and severe than is typically observed in individuals at the same level of development. This is seen in academic, occupational, and social situations. In the case of serial killers, the most prominent type is of an attention deficit, therefore we will focus on this type. There is a significant amount of evidence correlating behavioral and cognitive disfunction in young adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). These individuals are commonly referred to psychiatrists for treatment of psychopathy and rage. DSM-IV Diagnostic Criteria for Attention Deficit Disorder Antisocial Personality Disorder (also called psychopath or sociopath)- There are two underlying characteristics of people with this disorder: general disregard for others and repeated violation of the rights of others. Two central features that interplay with these characteristics are deceit and manipulation. These patterns usually begin in childhood or early adolescence and continue into adulthood. Antisocial personality disorder is also referred to as psychopathy, sociopathy, or dyssocial personality disorder. **NOTE: There is a general misconception that antisocial means someone who is withdrawn and doesn't want to socialize, however this is not the correct meaning.

25. Historical Treatment Of Psychological Disorders
Historical Treatment of psychological disorders As a result, the history of thetreatment of psychological disorders and insanity makes a grim story.
http://www.dushkin.com/connectext/psy/ch14/treat.mhtml
Historical Treatment of Psychological Disorders For centuries, supposedly "civilized" societies looked upon psychologically disturbed humans as subhumans, to be tortured or locked away and forgotten. As a result, the history of the treatment of psychological disorders and insanity makes a grim story. For hundreds of years insanity was associated with the supernatural, and the psychologically disturbed were thought to be possessed by demons or the devil. One "cure" that dates back to the Stone Age involves cutting a hole in the patient's skull to let out the evil spirits. In Europe, during the 17th and 18th centuries hundreds of thousands of persons were tortured to "bring them to their senses." If that did not work, they were burned or hanged.
In 1793, during the French Revolution, Philippe Pinel brought about a startling new reform at the Bicˆtre Asylum in Paris. He released the patients from their iron chains and called for "wiser and more moderate restraints." He reported that a number of previously violent patients, once freed of chains, became relaxed and talked quite agreeably with officials. Although he was not the first to do so, Pinel attempted to classify the different types of psychological disturbances and to suggest that different forms of insanity required different types of treatment. He showed the importance of keeping case histories and approaching each patient as worthy of individual treatment.
A major breakthrough for the mentally ill in the United States came in 1909 when Clifford W. Beers founded the National Committee for Mental Hygiene. Its purpose was to improve conditions in mental hospitals, encourage psychiatric research, enlarge the facilities for the care of the mentally ill, and make the public more aware of mental health.

Effects of Stress and Psychological Disorders on the Immune System
David B. Beaton Rochester Institute of Technology This is a review of the psychological field of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) and how psychopathology has an impact on the immune system. Two areas of study of PNI are examined: first, how the psychosocial environment affects the health of an individual along with the impact stressors play on the immune system; second, the effects of psychopathology on the immune system and how perceived stresses are assessed. Coping strategies are also looked at where in some cases they have shown abilities in strengthening the immune system. The understanding of PNI is crucial in understanding the association between immunity, depression, stressors, and psychosocial aspects, along with their interactions with each other and their causal relations. This is a review of a growing new field called psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), which incorporates facets of psychology, immunology, and neurosciences amongst many other fields. It attempts to understand the interactions between the nervous system, immune system and psyche. This is a rich area of research in which much work has done with many different theories. Specifically, one highly active area of research is where psychologists have been studying the effects that stress and psychopathology have on the immune system. This research has found correlations between stress, depression and the immune system.
The Immune System
The immune system is basically an interaction between cells and cellular products. The white blood cells (leukocytes), which are the main fighter cells of the immune system are made up of three classes; lymphocytes, monocytes, and granulocytes. Each type of cell has its own functions. Lymphocytes for instance, are subdivided into B cells, T-helper cells, T-suppressor cells, and natural killer cells. B cells are generally responsible for the production and secretion of antibodies. T-cells are responsible for making close and direct contact with the antigen. The other T cells are responsible for regulating the immune system; T-helper cells enhance whereas T-suppressor cells decrease the response.

Clinical Handbook of Psychological Disorders, Third Edition: A Step-by-Step Treatment Manual
David H. Barlow

Published by Guilford Press (July 2001) ISBN 1572306114 Price $68.00 Customer Reviews I am currently using this book as a supplemental text for a course in Psychopathology I am taking at Cleveland State University. The explanations of the various disorders are sometimes dense for the beginning graduate student, yet there is much to learn as each chapter not only discusses the etiology, but also various treatment approaches for each illness. Would I recommend this book? Depends on what kind of student you are. If you are the type who is interested in learning only what is necessary to get through a course, this book will bore you. But if you are looking for a resource that will take you deeper, and be useful to you long after you leave grad school, then I would invest the money. Having a well-stocked professional library is essential to good practice. This book should be on that is on your shelf. If I had to choose one book from all that is published on treatment issues-this would be the one. I have three reasons: DEPTH AND BREADTH: Each chapter has a surprising blend of information on both the clinical issue at hand as well as the treatment approach-a combination that is often absent in other treatment manuals. PRACTICAL MATERIAL: In general, the treatment descriptions are detailed enough that each approach can be implemented alone or as a supplement in a clinical setting. Furthermore, the clinical vignettes accurately describe therapy as an individually tailored activity and not as a sterile and mechanical process-a criticism that some treatment manuals deserve. EMPIRICAL SUPPORT: Linking clinical practice to well-researched therapies is imperative. While there is a flurry of empirically supported treatment manuals around now, purchasing only a few of them can quickly strain one's budget. Considering all that is contained in this book, I consider it a bargain.

Medical Consultations In-Residence Treatments Case Study The Maharishi Vedic Medicine SM Approach to Psychological Disorders
Including Anxiety and Depression.
Introduction
The Raj program for psychological disorders is conducted under the supervision of a licensed Medical Doctor and draws on knowledge from Maharishi Vedic Medicine, the world's oldest and most complete system of natural medicine. Through its unique assessment of causal imbalances at the basis of a condition and its wide range of time -tested recommendations, Maharishi Vedic Medicine provides the most comprehensive natural approach for psychological disorders available today.
Ayurvedic assessment of balance and imbalance in psychological disorders.
A quick review of psychological disorders shows why many imbalances could contribute to these conditions. Therefore gaining true relief from disorders like anxiety and depression will usually require a multi-factor, natural approach as is offered at The Raj. The buildup of chemical imbalances in the physiology can create psychological imbalance. These impurities often aggregate due to poor diet, weak digestion and blocked elimination. According to Ayur-Veda psychological disturbances start when fundamental imbalances develop in the deepest level of physiological functioning, the biological intelligence that controls all bodily processes. Biological intelligence has three divisions called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. When Vata is imbalanced a person becomes prone to anxiety, fear, mental instability and insomnia. When Pitta is imbalanced the individual becomes prone to anger and irritability. When Kapha is imbalanced the person is prone to lethargy and depression.

37. The Raj - Psychological Disorders Case Study

http://www.theraj.com/psych/casestudy.html

Program Overview
Medical Consultations In-Residence Treatments Case Study Case Study: Diabetes-Type II, Hypertension, and Depression A 55 year old gentleman entered The Center for Chronic Disorders on November 5, 1997 for a 21-day course of treatment for hypertension, Type II diabetes (non-insulin dependent), and depression. On admission to the program, he was taking medication for control of all three disorders. Following is a brief synopsis with respect to each disorder: a. Hypertension: Prior to starting medication in 1995, his blood pressure had been elevated (170/106). A few months prior to starting the Chronic Disorders Program (CDP), he had attempted to come off the medication on his own, but his blood pressure became elevated within one week (160/90) and the medication had to be resumed. On entering the CDP his blood pressure on medication was normal; however, he was experiencing side-effects from the medication, including depression and fatigue. After beginning the Chronic Disorders Program (CDP), his blood pressure medicine was stopped, but his blood pressure remained normal. On completing the 21-day program, he was placed on a home regimen which included some of the treatments used during the CDP. Five months following discharge from the CDP, his blood pressure continues to be normal (average 121/79) without medication. b. Diabetes, Type II: On admission, his blood sugars were poorly controlled, with daily fasting blood sugars averaging 212 during the month prior to his entry into the program (the ideal value for a diabetic is less than 120). During the 21-day CDP, his diabetes medicine was tapered to about one-half the admission dose. Despite this decrease in medicine, his fasting blood sugars dropped to an average of 118.7 over the final 12 days of treatment, a drop of 93 points from admission. His weight decreased from 147 on admission to 144 at discharge. Five months following discharge from the CDP, his hemoglobin A1C (a test of long-range blood sugar control) is 7.4 ("excellent control") compared to 8.4 just prior to admission. His medication dose remains half the pre-admission dose.
